WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 1924 11 BOOK REVIEWS "AREN'T WE ALL" Of the contemporary dramatists who have exposed the upper class family life of the English, none seem to have that easy satirical style that was com- mon in Oscar Wilde's plays as is shown by Frederick Lonsdale in "Aren't We All," which had a run on the New York stage and is now in book form. The story of the play leads the reader through some witty dialogue by Lord Grenham, the worldly wise father of Willie Tatham. Lord Gren- ham chants his advice and knowledge of women to his less experienced son, who in a moment of forgetfulness kissed a young woman just as his wife, Margot, comes on the scene. His regrettable step was taken be. cause he was longing for his wife who had taken her vacation in Egypt. The play is mainly "talk" and when Willocks, a man with whom Margot, under an assuemed name, had a flir- tation in Egypt, arrives, there is sus- pense developed--with the hope of see- ing some action. But even that cools off with more or less ease. All this while the reader realizes the foolishness of the entire affair, In the end--there is a little ruffling of the conversation,--the reader finds out that he, as well as the characters, is a fool. That's the theme, "Aren't We All" fools? "CHILDREN OF THE MOON" Martin Flavin took the road that leads to a bitter taste, in ending his play, "The Children of the Moon." as he does. From the viewpoint of the story as developed in the printed ver- sion, up to the last few pages, there is the development to a happy ending. It is almost inevitable that Major Bannister and Jane should leave us hand in hand, but not for the moon in the aeroplane in the fog. The treatment of the plot is some- what novel. It is serious with touches of the dreams of distorted persons taking complete control. With a happy close, there would probably be the criticism that "Children of the Moon" is merely a post war flight of fancy. As it is, the reaction is moody and pessimistic toward all the char- acters except the grandmother. The strangness of the incidents with relation to the ravings about the moon, puzzles a little. There is the belief that the Atherton family is composed of fanatic astronomers, but the grand- mother is a normal human being and so is Jane, until her selfish mother suggests to her that she, too, is a child of the moon. Then Jane gives up the man, Major Bannister, she wents and can have. And only by taking her to fly to the moon in the aeroplane in a heavy fog, does Jane consent to go with the Major--to death.--Jac Tulman. Open New Subdivision West of North Evanston William D. Several of the most fam- ous drivers in the dirt track world will compete at that meet, including Sig Haughdahl, the "three mile a minute man," the world champion. Chicago race fans have been anxious to see Haughdahl in action and will now have their opportunity. In addition to him the North Shore management has also secured the appearance of Horey with his famous Miller "8." Horey re- cently raced against Cliff Woodbury, noted Chicago pilot, at the Aurora speed meet, and Cliff will be given another chance against this veteran a week from Sunday. The program will consist of a variety of races, including several light and heavy car eliminations, a long distance final and some match events, which have proven so popular this season. One of these will bring together George Beck, the driver-promoter who has been going good on local speedways this season, and Fuzzy Davidson, the man who beat Ralph DePalma this winter. Both Beck and Davidson are now racing in "Zepp" specials and there is much rivalry be- tween them. They went to a dead heat at the Stanton track some time ago, and last month Beck beat Fuzzy at the North Phone 4903 i A eR i iad Be aaa SSS IN ALL THE WORLD NO CAR LIKE THIS JEWETT SIX ASK US WHY TRACY HOLMES MOTOR CO. ACK of energy, brain fag, or whatever you choose to call that playedout, rundown condition that makes work a bur- den, is gener- ally due to the exhausted con- dition of the nervous system. The power of resistance is not in the muscles, but in the nerves and men and women of to- day need nerves of steel, wheth- er their occu- pation is controlling a business, keeping books, teaching school or looking after household affairs. The most common cause of nerve exhaustion is defective vi- sion, for the eve has the greatest nerve supply of any organ in the body, and when the eye uses more than the supply of nerve energy allotted to it by nature, this drain upon the central nervous system Hours S:30 A. Special Prices on Cleaning During August To Add to the Home's Attractiveness An important essential in securing that clean, comforting, inviting atmosphere for the home lies in having the rugs, carpets and draperies clean and fresh. Dust and grime accumulate rapidly in these household articles. Home methods never get them thoroughly clean. Beating and shaking will get some of the dust and germs out--it will also destroy the finer textures. The labor saving and more effective way is to send the rugs, carpets and draperies to us to be cleaned. John B.
