ee ---- WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1924 PATHFINDERS = START SEASON Chief Davies Directs Smaller Boy Group The - Pathfinders' club has started its work for the year in Community House. This is a club for younger boys and is under the leadership of Director J. W. FE. Davies. The boys meet each Friday afternoon in Community House at 4 o'clock. The club has a definite pro- gram of a nature to arouse the keen in- terest of the members. It sets clear-cut goals" for them to reach and awards em- blems for certain accomplishments. There are'three ranks; pathfinder; guide, and trail maker. . : Fhe club is unique in its organization. Membership is open td Boys between the ages of 9 and 12 years. A boy, upon in~ dication of his desire;t6 become a mems= ber, and after getting permission from his parents, becomes a member on trial for a month. During the first month he does some- thing which he thinks, ought to entitle him to become a member of a tribe. If the thing which he has done is received favorably by the group as being worthy, he is received into membership. He then selects and announces his own Indian name, gives its meaning, and chooses a motto which he will try to observe. ; After he has become a member of the tribe he may become a guide. But he must first have done the following things: ; - Make a satisfactory hiking pole; learn the names and be able to give the loca- tion of all the streets in Winnetka ; learn names of 20 wild birds and their habits; secure a note from school showing that he is making good effort; secure a note from his parents showing that he is making good effort at home; learn names of 12 wild flowers and describe them, and the four which must not be picked in Illinois; do 20 things for the good of Winnetka. When a boy reaches the rank of a guide he may wear a buckskin loop. The third rank is that of trail maker. After he has become a guide the boy may try for trail maker. He must make the following records : Attendance at school without being late or causing any disturbance; attend- ance at Church school for three months without being tardy or causing disturb- ance; participation in three holiday cele- brations; honorable mention by the school athletic director or director of gymnasium at Community House at the end of a three-month period; attendance at tribe meeting for three months with- out absence, except on account of sick- ness; three real contributions to the tribe meetings which shall be voted by the tribe as being worthy. For each one of these records he may wear a ring on his buckskin loop. Last week the Pathfinders had a de- lightful afternoon together at the beach with Chief Davies. Homeward bound, Mr. Prouty be- thought himself of some urgent law business and carelessly "stepped on the gas" in several instances. This an- noyed our friend Elmer not a little, since it was necessary for .the post- master to maintain a constant weather eye for the vigilant gentry more com- monly described as motor cops.' At that, he proved to be a poor watchman, for the pair eventually fell into the toils. of the surreptitious cyclist. he ; "Going a bit. too fast?" queried Prouty as the' bluecoat planted a heavy foot on the running board. "Just a bit," snapped 'the "law. "Something over fifty." The pair eventually drove on. Well--Prouty is a persuasive- tongued ex-magistrate and Elmer has such an honest face.
