WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1924 19 PIANIST CHARMS LARGE AUDIENCE Many Witness Dedication of Skokie Piano The piano recital dedicating the Steinway concert grand piano, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Kuppenheimer to Skokie school, was given on Monday evening, October 13, in Jane Kuppen- heimer Memorial hall. The artist was Gitta Gradova, rated by a competent music critic as the "foremost woman pianist now before the public." The hall was well filled by an audience of Winnetkans of all ages. To a cursory observer there seemed to be almost as many children as grown-ups. On the stage at either side stood a huge vase filled with autumn leaves and yellow chrysan- themums. To the right on the stage was the splendid instrument, central feature in a memorable occasion. The recital was preceded by two very interesting speeches. Ernest Ballard, president of the Winnetka board of education, spoke first, accept- ing the piano in the name of the trustees. Then Isabel Milton, school child, representing the Skokie school, thanked Mr. and Mrs. Kuppenheimer for their thoughtfulness and gener- osity. 3 The artist of the evening then pre- sented her program, comprising posi- tions by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Scria- bin, and other well known musicians. A criticism of Miss Gradova's playing would be presumptuous by one who is not himself a trained judge of pian- istic ability. It was masterful, and drew from the audience sincere and vigorous applause. Newspaper critics tell us that she is skillful, talented, virile, powerful, imaginative, pictur- esque, vital, and that she has "accur- ate technical mastery," a "sensitive touch," and a "soulful tone." After hearing her recital we agree heartily. They also tell ys that she looks like a "combination of Peter Pan and Lord Byron." She did. We were especi- ally taken by her playing of an en- core number, a Chopin polonaise. For dynamic brilliancy and clarity of tone it was a miracle. After the recital Miss Gradova wrote her signature dozens of times for her juvenile admirers. Those who did not see her seated at a rude table off stage completely enclosed in a mass of worshipful children, missed a genuine thrill. Alles Property Owners Victors in Court Fight Owners of the Alles property, other- wise known as Rosewood Terrace, re- ceived a favorable decision in the Ap- pelate court Monday of this week on an appeal by the Village of Winnetka from a judgement in the Circuit court grant- ing a writ of mandamus ordering the Village authorities to approve a plat of proposed subdivision of the property in question. In view of the fact that one jurist in the Appelate court refused to concur in the decision favorahle to the Alles prop- erty, the Village will, it is expected, ap- peal to the Supreme court of the state. Village authorities refused to approve a plat of subdivision of the Alles prop- erty about a year ago, on the ground that the village ordinance with regard to "Flats" had not been complied with. The Alles owners received a decision against the Village in the Circuit court. On an appeal to the Appelate court the decision of the lower tribunal was af- firmed. Winnetka all day Day, October 14, found Jieir bulletins so popular, that they were entirely soid out by 11:30 in the morning, so reports Mrs. Morris who was in charge of the sales.
