Action of the council followed closely a sug- gestion that a new name be given the church, voiced in a sermon preached recently by the pastor, Rev. James Austin Richards, on the subject, "What's In a Name?" The council recommended at its meeting that the church take action to change its designation to "The Vil- lage Church." Recommendation for change in name was set forth in detail, giving reasons for desiring a change and the significance of the suggested name. The council's report was as follows : . Council's Report "'The Village Church' is the name that the "New Name" committee re- . ported to the council at its meeting Monday night, November 10. The committee recognizes that no nome whatsoever is free from all drawbacks or limitation, but reports that after long and careful study it is unanimous in its belief that this is the best name available. "The name 'Village Church' avoids all the false impressions that the pres- ent name so strongly gives, as ex- plained in the Sunday sermon (Mr. Richards' sermon of November 9). It also suggests that it is the business of every church not to live to itself, but to try to serve the whole community. "The name 'Village Church' is cour- teous to all related and sister organi- zations. Many have suggested the name 'Community Church,' but it was immediately seen that that name leads to hopeless confusion with the re- lated institution of Community House, and invites people to identify the House and the Church in a manner not at all true to the facts. This would be discourteous to Community House, detrimental to its work and to that of the church. Find No Discourtesy "The novelty of the new name sug- gested raised the question whether it involves any discourtesy to any other church. The conclusion reached was that it does not. Letters have been written to other communities where the name proposed has long been in use to inquire whether it" were ever criticised by other churches on the ground of discourtesy. Some members of the com- mittee further pointed out that they regard the name 'Christ Church' as as the best name any church can possibly have, but no church using that name is ever accused of trying to monopolize the Master or to sug- gest that it is the only Church of Christ. As that name suggests an al- legiance to the Master common to all churches, so the name 'Village Church' suggests the common endeav- or of all our churches to make this a Christian community.
