6 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, TANUARN 24: 1925 FIND WHOOPING 'COUGH SERIOUS Highly Infectious Dangerous, Report Is and Jumping from an average of 15 to 50 cases daily since January 1, whoop- ing cough is now one of the most prevalent contagions in the state, ac- cording to a dispatch from the state health department. Young children are affected more than any other group. "Contrary to popular opinion," said Dr. Isaac D. Rawlings, state health director, "whooping cough is one of the most serious and fatal of the childhood infections. In 1923 it caused 515 fatalities in the state or nearly as many deaths as typhoid and scarlet fevers combined, almost as many as measles and more than half the num- ber due to diptheria. During the first half of 1924 it caused 211 deaths and and probably more than that during the second half. These were the num- ber of deaths attributed to whooping cough directly and nobody knows how many of the broncho-pneumonia fa- talities, of which there were more than 3,000, originated in attacks of whooping cough. Highly Infectious "Highly infectious, whooping cough may attack a child who merely passes a patient on the street. Wafted upon a gust of air, the minute particles of excretion from the nose and throat of the sick may carry the germs into the air passages of the well. The disease is spread also by direct con- tack between the sick and well, but it is highly improbable that a third person frequently carries it except on handkerchief or other article having on it moist recent discharges from nose or mouth of the patient. "Very young children suffer most severely from whooping cough. Out of 515 deaths from that disease in 1923--256, or 50 per cent, were among children less than one year old. Nearly 80 per cent were among chil- dren under two, while 95 per cent were among little tots of less than five summers. It is rare that a per- son above ten years of age succumbs to whooping cough. Aged Are Immune "This observation plainly indicates that the advance of age brings with prs wif ay positive immunity or at least a ; i . ; tal resistance to whooping cough in the great majority of people. Were i 4.480, disastrous epidermcs--wouid "break out among adult populations who had escaped by some during childhood. "More serious than on its own ac- count, perhaps, whooping cough is frequently the forerunner of such serious complications as broncho- pneumonia, especially in winter, tu- berculosis, malnutrition and gastro- intestinal disease. These disturbances are indeed credited with fatalities which would not have occurred in many instances had it not been for whooping cough. "The best thing for whooping cough is to avoid it. Contact or close as- sociation with a patient is practically the only way the disease is spread. Sometimes it may not be recognized as whooping cough, but only as a cold. Severe cases may follow exposure to mild ones. Preventative and cura- tive vaccines have been prepared and are on the market. Some physicians believe they are helpful in reducing severity of the disease if -given im- mediately after exposure. The health department recommends that parents follow the advice of a physician in reference to vaccine, if the children have been so unfortunate to have been exposed to whooping cough. ~h Cliance Scandinavian Church to Hold Bible Discussions A special series of Bible lessons will be given at the First Scandinavian Evangelical church beginning Wednes- day evening, February 4, and con- tinuing through February 14. Country Day Quintet Defeats Parker Entry The basket ball season at the North Shore Country Day school is well un- der way in the boys' new gymnasium. Captain McEwen feels that with the adequate facilities for practice the squad has every chance for a good season. Through Manager Crilly Butler, two games were played with the alumni during Christmas vacation and since then two other practice games have been staged with local teams. On Friday, January 16, the Countrv Day school opened the season with a game with the Francis Parker school of Chicago, winning from the Parker squad by a score of 37 to 6. Both teams played hard but Parker, ex- cept spasmodically, was unable to pull into form. Lack of team work was Parker's chief difficulty, but the North Shore squad played a swift, consistent and well balanced game, making a fine start for the 1925 season. Read the Want-Ads What Are Numetal Weather Strips? NUMETAL WEATHER STRIPS are made of a specially prepared spring metal that has been laboratory tested for temper. They are placed between the middle rails of your windows and between the window sash and the frame. They are invisible when the windows are closed, and the part exposed, when a window is open, has an attractive and substantial appearance. The spring and tension in the strips will take care of all shrinkage and expansion of the windows and doors, and will make a tight, yet easily operat- ed, window at all times.
