MUSIC APPRECIATION COURSE IS APPROVED Plans for a course in music appre- ciation to be given at the Skokie school this spring were presented to those attending the Parent-Teacher association meeting at the school Tuesday evening of this week. The plans, which were explained by W. W. Beatty, principal, and Mrs. P. B. Kohlsaat, music director of the school, involve a study of musical form from folk music to symphony music. , It is proposed to give two half hours a week to the discussion and study of music forms, which will be followed by concerts by professional artists il- lustrating in ideal fashion how music of this kind is usually presented. The purpose back of the course is to train children in the ability to listen to and understand the type of instrumental music which should form one of their greatest pleasures in adult life. Following the presentation of the plan, a discussion was held and the group of parents who were present at the meeting expressed themselves practically unanimously in favor of the scheme. In order to meet the ex- penses of the proposal a fund of money will have to be raised and the cost of this divided among the child- ren would amount to about $3.50 each for the entire course. It was decided to invite all parents of the school to share in this expense, but in view of the fact that some might be unable to meet their full share, requests were made for larger subscriptions from those who were financially able to give them. Many parents asked to be allowed to attend the concerts and the study lessons themselves and it was agreed that they might do so upon assuming a share of the expense equal to that of the children. Personal let- ters will be sent out to those parents who did not attend the meeting, ex- plaining the plan in detail and invit- ing their co-operation. " Miss A. Carlsten and Miss Anna Burkland have gone to Pasadena for the winter.
