| | | : phn; WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1925 MOTHERS HEAR TALK ON MUSIC Director at Hawthorn School Encourages Movement for Toy Orchestra ILLUSTRATES ADDRESS Calls Music Fine Art for Children By A MOTHER There was not a dull moment for those who heard Miss Florence Newcomb, di- rector of music at Hawthorne school, speak last Tuesday afternoon on "Music Education for Children." During the hour she communicated to her audience so much enthusiasm in her subject and created such an interest, that at its close, the mothers were making definite plans for a toy orchestra for the children of the school. Miss Newcomb was commissionad to purchase the necessary instruments which will form a nucleus of an equipment which in time may prove to be very valuable to the youngsters. It is possi- ble that certain instruments may be loan- ed to the school while the project is still in its infancy and these generous offers greatly helped as much by their exprssion of interest as hy their actual value. The future of an orchestra seems assured and it is certain that, delighted as the chil- dren will be, they cannot be any more pleased over it than their parents. Outlines Forms of Music Miss Newcomb opened her talk with that well known quotation from Hale's "A Man Without a Country," "The man who hath no music in his soul is fit for treason, strategms and spoils," and pro- ceeded to explain why an understanding and appreciation of music is so essen. tial to us all. She gave a short outline of different forms of music, dwelling on the folk song, which she said combined perfect balance, rhythm and melody, the three essentials of music, Music, she pointed out, was the only one of the arts which a tiny child could grasp and re- produce for himself. Quoting an emi- nent authority in drawing her conclusions, she said: "Education is the perception of beauty. Music is the highest form of beauty. As it is the only form attainable to the very little children, it therefore plays an important part in the early education of children. Developing the natural incli- nation and taste for the right sort of children. Developing the natural in- clination and taste for the right sort of music is essential in these early years. and opens up a world of happiness, as escape from the dull reality in later years." She pointed out that the Elysian fields of music need not be reversed for the trained musician, only appreciation is the PAINT Your Car Now While the weather is bad and you are not using it much. Illustrates on Piano Never for a moment did Miss New- comb allow her subject to drop to the monotonous levels of a lecture and at this point she gave several little selec- tions on the piano from the best com- posers which she uses daily in training the children. Memorable among these was a minuet composed by Mozart at the age of five. It is in perfect form and delightful in its simplicity. After the address a short business meeting was held. Two officers were elected to act as president, and secretary and treasurer of the Hawthore School Parent-Teachers association for the bal- ance of this year. The matter of dues was discussed and an assestnent was de- cided upon. Announcement of the date of the next meeting, which will be on Tuesday, March 17, was made. Several helpful suggestions were of- fered and discussed and when tea was served at the close of the meeting the sentiment was that a very definite pro- gress had been made. The social hour was, as it alway is, a time of real in- timacy and pleasant relaxation. We Breathe 32 Pounds of Air Each Day Executive heads of America's manu- factured gas industry are waging a warfare against the smoke nuisance. They say that the average person con- sumes about six pounds of food and water a day. In addition to this he takes into his lungs thirty-two pounds of air each day. Vast sums of money are spent to insure unpolluted water and a pure food supply, they say, but up to this time little attention has been paid to 2 pure air supply. Yet every day we use thirty-two pounds of ir against air a total of six pounds of food and water, The medical profession seems to be agreed that air pollution from soft coal smoke is responsible for many of the diseases they are trying to combat. The effect is both direct and indirect. Possibly the worst is the indirect ef- fect of partially cutting off the sun- light. This not only lowers the bodily resistance, but has a depressing effect oa the individual's whole outlook on ife. The only solution to the smoke prob- lem, with its attendant evils of soot, ashes and grime, is the universal use of gas fuel in the home and industry, according to engineers who have de- voted years of study to the subject. SAVING SERVICE Painting and Decorating Electric Railways Plan Large 1925 Expenditures The average cash fare of electric railways in cities of 25,000 population and over, increased from 7.31 cents in January, 1924, to 7.49 cents in January, 1925, or about 2% per cent. Advance in fares, however, did not keep pace with the advance in practically all other prices. Evidence that the electric railway industry is rapidly reaching a healthy condition is indicated by the fact that in 1924 a total of 312 miles of new track was constructed, this being the largest single year's construction since 1918. Seven hundred miles of track ment of track amounted to 225 miles, also were reconstructed. Abandon- this being large non-paying lines that were of burden to the car riders on the paying portion of the systems. A survey made by the Electric Rail- way Journal indicates that approxi- mately $342,000,000 will be spent in 1925 by electric railways for new plant and equipment, maintenance, materials and supplies. This total represents an increase of 30 per cent over the amount spent for similar purposes in 1924.
