6 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1925 Boys Will Build Real Viking Ship For Island Camp The spirit of the old Viking sea kings bids fair to be revived again if the plans of Charles: A. Kinney and a group of north shore boys are fulfilled. Mr, Kinney has just been granted permission by the Village of Winnetka to set up a 50-foot tent near the pumping station on the lake front there to be used for the building of a 36-foot dragon ship. Work on the new craft will be started as soon as the necessary tools, machines and materials can be assembled. The craft when completed will be manned by a crew of 30 boys, 28 at the oars, one at the lookout and one at the "steere" board. A large square sail will be used when winds are fair. The en- tire boat, including sails and dragon head and tail will be brilliantly colored to give the effect of a long sleek sea monster gliding through the water. The new craft will be used at Adven- ture Island camp in Sturgeon Bay, where Mr. Kinney and his group of boys go each summer. As the island is just a mile off the mainland the boys will make frequent trips of exploration along the shore and to the other islands in the vicinity. The boat will provide absolute- ly safe and ample quarters for from 10 to 15 boys on trips of several days' dur- ation. The planning and building of a viking boat is an effort on the part of Mr. Kinney to construct a type of craft, not only of recognized sea-worthy qualities, but one that is historically associated with those ideals which the camp is en- deavoring to instill into the boys--clean, simple living, manliness, courage, vigor, resourcefulness and love of adventure. With their love of freedom, their fine understanding of and reverence for the mysteries and moods of nature, along with their unspoiled and adventurous spirits, the vikings typify characteristics which have a powerful appeal to boys of from 8 to 13 years of age and an immense influence on their character de- velopment. The lines of the hull of the new craft will closely follow those of the famous Gogstad viking ship built a thousand years ago, a replica of which was sailed and rowed from Norway to Chicage in 1893, and which is now at Lincoln Parl. 'An interesting coincidence is that Washington Island and the country in the immediate vicinity of the camp was settled by direct descendents of the vik- ings, coming from Iceland about 60 years ago. Many of the famed viking names, such as Sigurdson, Gudmunder, Einar- son and others may still be found on the hotels and stores of Washington Island, and many of the original Icelanders are still alive. Tt is interesting to speculate on the memories that will be aroused in them at sight of a craft similar to those that carried their ancestors on their historic voyages. Bishop Hughes to Preach Before Methodists Sunday Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes will preach Sunday morning at the 11 o'clock service in the Wilmitte Parish Methodist church. This will be the first sermon Bishop Hughes has delivered in. Wilmette since making his home in the village. Of the 25 greatest preachers in America, Bishop Hughes is easily prominent in even that small group. It will be a big event in the program of the local church and it is predicted that the Methodists of Wilmette par- ish, including Wilmette, Kenilworth and Winnetka, will more than tax the seating capacity of the church. The service will open at 11 o'clock, Daylight Saving time. Mrs. Cham- berlain's big choir will provide a pro- gram of music.
