20 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1925 N. T. ORCHESTRA ENTERS CONTEST Competes for High Honors in Cook County High School Meet Saturday WIN AT PRELIMINARIES Confident of Securing Ban- ner Award in Finals The New Trier High school orches- tra will journey to Chicago Saturday afternoon of this week where they will compete in the Chicago and Cook County High School Orchestra con- test, held at Orchestra hall. The con- test will begin at 2 o'clock, eight or- chestras competing, four in:each group. For several years, band competitions have been held in Chicago under the direction of the Department of Mili- tary Training. Encouraged by the suc- cess of these contests, Superintendent McAndrew of Chicago and Superin- tendent Tobin of the Cook county schools, last January appointed com- | mittees of high school principals to arrange a contest of high school or- chestras to be held this spring. Hold Preliminary Tests Fach high school of Chicago and of Cook county was invited to enter one of the four preliminary contests held April 18 and May 2. Two orchestras were chosen at each of these to take part in the final contest on May 9 in Orchestra hall. Of the eight compet- ing orchestras, the four in Group One were from high schools of less than 2000 pupils, and the four in Group Two from schools of more than 2000 pupils. Fach orchestra will play a selection of its own choice and a test piece. In the program, only the name of the chosen selection is given, as the test piece is the same for the four orches- tras of a group. In Group One, the test piece is "The Thorn Rose Waltz" by Tschaikowsky. In Group Two, the test piece is "The Triumphal March" from the Sigurd Josalfar Suite by Grieg. Banners are Awards Four banners will be awarded in each of the two groups. Thus each school that won first or second place in a preliminary contest and took part in the finals will be given a visible token to place on the walls of its as- sembly hall. These banners showing the place won in the final competition will be prepared and delivered to the schools before the close of the pres- ent term. Only one other similar contest has was held under the auspices of the [llinois State Teachers' association, at the Hyde Park high school in Chi- cago. Twelve orchestras from Chica- go and outside schools took part. Lane Technical High won first place, Hyde Park High, second, and Evanston Township High, third. School authorities declared that this indicated a large enrollment this year. Last year 520 pupils at- tended, not counting those who mere- ly attended the swimming glasses. The subjects offered are English, Spanish, French, Latin, mathematics, history, commerce, science and me- chanical drawing. It is required that a minimum of 15 pupils register for a course before it will be offered. About 23 instructors will be in charge of the work. The women of the Episcopal church had a bridge party, last week at the home of Mrs. White, on Sheridan road, for the benefit of the Rectory fund. Despite the steady downpour and driv- ing wind, it was a most successful party and a goodly sum was made for the fund.
