TT tm = WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1925 DRAMA SCHOOL OPENS SEASON Northwestern University Is Scene of Fifth Annual Drama League Course NOTABLE INSTRUCTORS Woodman Thompson Is on Teaching Roster A brilliant faculty of 14 leading au- thorities in various branches of the drama took charge of their classes Monday morning in the fifth annual Drama League Institute at North- western university. The program of courses, numbering 22 is the most complete ever offered by the Institute, it is said. Woodman Thompson will be one of the faculty. For the past four year he has been a leading Broadway producer, art director and stage designer, and for eight years was with the Carnegie School of Technology. His course in stage craft, given during the last week of the Institute, will be the climax of the course. Theodore B. Hinckley, editor of the Drama magazine and for several years director of classes in play-writing at Northwestern university, will teach high school drama. Mrs. A. Starr Best, of Lvanston, who is founder of the Drama league of America and for sev- en years director of the Pilgrim players at the Evanston Congregational church there will teach religious drama. Dean Teaches Directing Alexander Dean, a member of the Northwestern university School of Speech faculty, formerly at Montana university and the Little Theater of Dallas, Texas, will have classes in play directing and community theater man- agement. George Junkin will be reg- istrar of the school and will teach lighting and community work. He was formerly a professional actor and di- rector, and for five years field director of the Playground and Recreation as- sociation of America. He is now Na- tional Field secretary of the Drama league. Cora Mel Patten, founder of, and for 13 years secretary of the league's junior committee, will head junior work in the turned from researches in Europe, will give lectures on European drama. Winifred Ward, who is in charge of dramatics in the Boltwood Interme- diate high school of Evanston and a lecturer at Northwestern, will teach junior drama. Gladys Hight, one-time premier danseuse of "I'he Chocolate Soldier" and other Broadway produc- tions and founder of her own school of the dance, will also be on the faculty. Instructs in Make-up James Church, who is a faculty mem- ber of the Northwestern university School of Speech will open his regular class in Make-up to members of the institute. Voice will be taught by Mary Agnes Doyle, who has been teaching this subject at the Art Institute, Chi- cago She was formerly on the stage in the New Theatre company at the Cen- tury 'Theater, New York, and on tour with Edyth Wynne Matthison. Among the students of the institute are many north shore people who are planning to assist in local productions next winter.
