WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 1920 CHICAGO AFFECTS LOCAL INSURANCE Rates for Theft Protection Doubled Here Because of Close Proximity Because of its nearness to Chicago, the north shore, whose rate of crime is low in comparison with other vi- cinities of equal population, is com- pelled to pay the same rates for bur- glary and theft insurance as Chi- cago, where the hazards are so great that rates are considerably higher than in any other city in the United States, according to local insurance men. Insurance dealers on the north shore say that the Cook county rates are approximately twice as much as the rates for the rest of the state, and these rates obtain on the north shore as well as in Chicago. } Advances This Year The rates each year are based on the amount of theft during the past year, and the way in which thieves and robbers are dealt with by the authorities. The north shore deal- ers 'are of one opinion, that the lax- ity of the authorities of Chicago in handling crime is the biggest factor in the Jigh rates of Cook county. The rates for the present year have advanced approximately 25 per cent over the rates for last year. In ad- dition to these increased rates all policies less than $2,000 must include an 80 per cent contribution clause, which works an additional hardship on most policy holders, for most policies are written for legs than $2.000. The increase in rates for the pres- ent year are now in effect for all new nolicies. All renewals made before September will not be charged the increased rates. Doubled in Five Years It is estimated that during the past five years the rates for theft and burglary insurance in Cook county have more than doubled. Although there were only four bur- glaries and eight robberies in Evan- ston during 1919, the rates have in- creased here the same that they have increased in Chicago, which had 6,055 burglaries and 2916 robberies.
