HTT October 24, 1925 WINNETKA TALK 33 TELL OF CANEY CREEK Mountain Boys Relate Graphic Story of Life and Customs Among the Kentucky Mountaineers Four boys from Caney Creek, Ken- tucky, gave to an interested audience at Horace Mann school a simple and straightforward story of life in the mountains of their native state, Mon- day evening, October 19. The ages of the youthful speakers ranged all the way from about 20 down to 13 or 14. They depicited with a fluency worthy of much more mature speakers, con- ditions around Caney Creek. One of them while describing the roads in the neighborhood of his home, men- tioned with apparent pride the fact that in it there was only one mud- hole--14 miles long! He spoke of the outworn methods of teaching which had prevailed in Caney Creek schools before the coming of teachers from the East. He laid especial stress on the fact that the mountaineers in his part of Kentucky were direct descendants of those people who had emigrated from England more than 200 years ago and, traveling west, had lost them- selves in the mountains. Another boy reviewed, referring to a chart, the system of moral educa- tion now being inculcated in the Caney Creek schools. He too elicited the admiration of the audience by the fluency, vigor, and sincerity with which he told his story. The main purpose of these boys was not to ask for help but to let people in neighboring states know the true condition of these pure blooded Ameri- can citizens in among these mountains of Kentucky; to arouse an intelligent interest in the movement among the youth down there for better educa- tion and for a breaking up of the 200 year old superstitions.
