November 28, 1925 WINNETKA TALK 15 OPERA TEEMING WITH SPIRIT OF HOLIDAYS Patrons Display Unprecedented Enthusiasm as Artists Present Mid-Season Gems The holiday spirit is now especially noticeable in the increased enthusi- asm of the thousands that regularly patronize the Chicago Civic Opera at the Auditorium. According to the ad- vance sale, the week of November 29 to December 5 will be one of the ban- ner periods of the season, opening Sun- day afternoon, November 29, with a gala matinee bill that should prove of more than usual interest to the army of commuters who regard the Sunday afternoon performances as their very own. The occasion--the first anniversary of the death of the great composer Puccini--will be observed by the pre- sentation of his most popular work, "Madame Butterfly." Rosa Raisa will sing the name role--her first rendi- tion of the opera with the Chicago Civic Opera company. Pavloska, Hackett and Rimini will have the other important roles and Giorgio Polacco, musical director of the company, will conduct. The popular priced Saturday night performance with which the current week closes will be "La Traviata" in- stead of "Aida" as previously announc- ed. The cast will include Melius, Cor- tis, Steel, Beck, Torti, Oliviero; Ouk- rainsky and corps de ballet; conductor Moranzoni. Ballet to Feature Monday evening, November 30, "Herodiade", one of the spectacular revivals. of the season, will be given with an all-star cast, including Mason, Van Gordon, Kerr, Ansseau, Bonelli, Cotreuil, Beck and Nicolich; Serge Oukrainsky and Milles. Nemeroff and Shermont will offer divertissements with an elaborate ballet. Grovlez will conduct. Tuesday "Samson and Delilah" will be repeated with d'Alvarez, Marshall, Formichi, Cotreuil; Oukrainsky and corps de ballet, Weber conducting. "L'Elisir d'Amore" will be g.ven for the first time this year on Wed- nesday evening. At this time, Florence Macbeth will also make her first ap- pearance of the season. In the same cast will be Clara Shear who made her debut recently in "The Masked Ball." Tito Shipa, Giacomo Rimini and Vit- torio Trevisan. They will guided by the baton of Roberto Moranzoni. "Die Walkuere" Coming Another work to be given its first presentation this year will be "Die Walkuere" Thursday evening, under the direction of Giorgio Polacco. The cast will be notable and include Van Gordon, Forrais, Lenska, Lamont, Kipnis and Cotreuil; Maestro Polacco, conductor.
