Winnetka Talk has published many articles regarding the various phases of Winnetka's remark- able system of public school instruc tion. Little emphasis, however, has been given the physical training side of the work, the development of boys and girls to make them robust and the inculcation of attitudes that make for good sportsmanship and fair-deal- ing. The accompaning article has been prepared and published in pam- phlet form jointly by Harry P. Clarke, director of physical education, and Willard Beatty, assistant superintend- ent of schools. It should be of inter- est to every parent of a school boy or girl. This is the third installment of the article, the first two having ap- peared in consecutive issues of Win- netka Talk immediately preceding. In working out our after-school sports program, we have made our aim athletic participaltion for every- one, and in the play period competi- tions, even the poorest players find welcome and helpful training. In the autumn we have football for boys and hockey for girls. Groups o boys are on the field every afternoon, while the girls' hockey games are limit- ed to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. During the winter, begin- ning about the first of December and continuing until about Easter, is the basketball season for both boys and girls. Play is scheduled three after- noons a week for both, and in order to accommodate the teams it has been necessary to utilize a second gymna- pasium near the school. During the spring we are again able to get out- doors, and both boys and girls play baseball, using the four-inch soft ball. Agree to Rules When the sports program is organ- ized each season, the children are re- quired to sign a blank, agreeing to observe the following general rules: 1. I will obey the training rules by the coach. (1 2. 1 will attend all practice periods and games unless excused. 3. 1 will not play with any other team unless given permission by the coach. 4. 1 will accept coaches', captains', and officials' decisions cheerfully and without dispute. 5. T will conduct myself on or off the field in a manner that will reflect credit upon my team and the Skokie school. 6. I will at all time be courteous to members of opposing teams and their supporters. The parents are also requested to sign this blank, and it is impressed upon them that, by signing it, they assume a definite obligation to assist the child in fulfilling his agreement. § |The home-room teacher, who is re- sponsible for keeping track of the child's ' scholastic and disciplinary record, must also sign the blank.
