January 2, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 13 In Scoutdom An exceptionally exciting signalling contest was held by Troop 1 Friday evening, December 18! The teams en- tered in the contest were: Hugo Hart- man and: Bob Reschke, Al Stults and Bud Fairman, and David Riddle and Charles Eastman. The rules of the contest were that both the sender and the receiver could have but one as- sistant, that the message was to be sent in the International code, that the receiver was to hand his message to the judges as soon as he had received and that the mémbers of the teams were to speak to nobody but their as- sistants. The message that was hand- ed to the senders was as follows: "The first one through with this message will win the contest." "B. S.A." The winners of the contest were Al Stults and Bud Fairman, both mem- bers of the Wolf patrol. These two boys are new Scouts this year and are proving themselves to be good workers. Dr. Eisenbrand announced that the troop would take a hike on Saturday, December 26. There will be no Scout meeting on January 1, New Year's day. The Blackhawk patrol will give a stunt on Friday, January 8 which is the date of the next Scout meeting. Mr. Cameron's second night as Scoutmaster of Troop II was a huge success. He led a very enlightening discussion on "What to do when lost," and gave instructions to the Scouts about handling different situations that- are possible. The Scouts asked him questions which he answered to the best of his ability. Mr. Cameron rec- ommended several very good books for a Scout to rad, two of which were "Rolf in the Woods" and "Two Little Savages" both written by Earnest Thompson Seton. Mr. Mills had Troop III working on the International code in short or- der. The troop worked by patrols in order that the patrol leaders could su- pervise each group. Mr. Mills announ- ced that on January 8, the patrol that could signal best, as a whole, would receive a patrol flag. Ralph Johansen announced that his patrol had chosen the name Stag pa- trol. At about 8:15 o'clock the three troops met in the gymnasium where they held games and relay races. They held an inter-troop O'Grady drill-down which proved to be very exciting. Near the end of the drilldown the four strongest drillers were the only ones left. These Scouts are Gould Davies, Fred Rumm- ler, Toque Stoddard, and Charles Markley. After some speedy drilling, Toque Stoddard won the contest by obeying a trick command which the other three Scouts failed to obey. A council meeting was held and tests for tenderfoot, second class, and first class were given. Several merit badge examinations were given to first class Scouts. Troops one, two and three held a hike Saturday, December 26. Mrs. M. Baker of 549 Provident avenue left for Brooklyn, N. Y. De- cember 23, to visit her son, Frank Ba- ker and his family. Mrs. Baker may remain a month or longer with her son who has been very ill for some time. Woke Se Miss Dorothy Thomson, daughter of Judge and Mrs. Charles M.
