"I am back to my studies after a short vacation which I spent helping with some buildings. The schools have just recently opened here so I believe it is about time for me to start study- ing, too. I am enclosing the 2lst les- son on the English grammar for you to correct. "I congratulate you on the interesting and uplifting article which I read in the Ziegler Magazine for September, and which was taken from the American Magazine. We who are looking for progress, and something more than simply living, we who would be a part of the active and ambitious world and not sit back in darkness and idleness and thereby let that which is in us per- haps the greatest gift that God has given man, go to waste, not only do we thank God but in the second place we thank you for the untiring efforts put forth in our behalf. We cannot say enough in expression of our thanks to the generosity of those who have made this work possible to the generosity of those who have made this work pos- sible for us. I hope you will not think me a religious fanatic, but I am just beginning to believe religion should be a part of our education." It isn't very long ago since the boy pressed a gun to his temple. Let me tell you of him. He is 22, and a Spaniard, one of a large family. One of his brothers was killed at a local parafin works. The other died of tuberculosis. His step- father died soon after. And he was left sole support of a mother and sister. He sickened, and grew despondent. After months in hospital--he did not die as he wished to do--he rallied, and grew well. Someone told him of the Hadley Correspondence School. At the time of his enrollment his English was poor. He has improved remarkably. Renews Interest in Life But in his association with the school, his interest in life awakened anew. Later, he built himself a little grocery store in Los Angeles, his home city, and to expedite its building he him- self devised forms in which he cut the timbers. He wired the store, painted his own signs, erected his own shelv- ing, constructed his own refrigeration and show-cases. He is successfully running his little store. And now his vision is taking him along still farther. For two years he has been taking work from the school, and is now being trained in writing stories. Winnetka people must feel proud to know they have helped to bring this boy back from despondency.
