In the East there has been this season a very notable revival of Gilbert and Sullivan opera, partly perhaps because this year oc- curs the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of that memorable colla- boration. At the school, however, this selection represents a sustained inter- est of long standing, "The Gondoliers" having been given last year and "The Pirates of Penzance" the year before. In accordance with the educational practice for which North Shore stands, the work of production has been handled as largely as possible within the school. With two highly special exceptions, it has proved possible to handle it all within the school. Sev- eral elaborate coats forming part of the costume worn, supposedly, by members of the peerage it was found best to hire. . The services of a pro- fessional orchestra it was thought would be fairest to whatever artistic quality the opera might hope to achieve. 3ut those in the cast are present members of the high school who have received their training in the music classes and their coaching from regular members of the teaching staff; the scenery was designed and executed by the Stage Craft and Art classes; the costumes, with the excep- tion noted, were likewise designed by students, and in the main were actu- ally made by them with, in some in- stances, assistance from parents and teachers working alongside; the stage installation and the management of the lighting effects were handled by students. The programs, printed at the school, give, in addition to material bearing upon the current presentation, an interesting reproduction of the pro- gram for the original performance, November 25, 1882. A special performance was set for Thursday, in the afternoon, so that the children of the Lower school might enjoy it. At this performance, also, and at that of Friday evening, the school had the pleasure of entertain- ing a large number of members of the Skokie school as guests. This happy privilege developed in part out of the generous offer, by Skokie, of its fine and ample auditorium for the pub- lic production, a neighborly courtesy which, though not utilized, was very warmly appreciated at North Shore. The opera is staged in the girls' gym- nasium on the Country Day school grounds, the last two of the thrée performances being on Friday and to- night at 8:15 o'clock.
