Others Ananian, Curci and Miss Correnti. Mr. Papi will conduct. Thursday afternoon, July 29, will be a red-letter day for the children, this | bringing the annual carnival and pag- | eant under the direction of Miss Ber- tha Iles. This year the pageant is entitled "The History of Chicago" and scores of children will participate. The carnival will bring forth a variety of attractive costumes, artistic groupings {and dances. It will be held on the north campus. All children twelve | years of age or under will be admitted | free to the carnival. Seats are free for everyone. "Tosca" will be given its initial pre- sentation of the season on Thursday night, July 29, when Mme. Elisabeth Rethberg will be heard in the title role, Edward Johnson will be cast as Cavaradossi and Guiseppe Danise will be Scarpia. The power of Mme. Reth- berg's voice combined with its tonal beauty, makes her ideal as Sardou's heroine in which she must rise to cli- max after climax, and one can readily imagine the manner in which this singer will render the immortal "Vise d'arte", one of the greatest of oper- atic arias. Johnson is likewise admirably en- dowed to portray Cavaradossi, in which singing and acting are demanded in equal proportions and the hero must make an impression every instant. With Giuseppe Danise as Scarpia, there is much to look forward to. It is a mat- ter of pride that this artist added this role to his repertoire at Ravinia some seasons ago, and he has been tremend- ously successful in it ever since. Dan- in the cast are Miss Falco, D'Angelo, | ise possesses the art of bel canto sing: ing in unlimited degree and he has his own way of presenting the villainous Scarpia, in which he sets him forth as a polished gentleman of evil nature. Tovison will be the Sacristan. D'An- gelo, the refugee and Mr. Curci, Spoletto. Papi will conduct. A deluge of requests from his pat- rons have caused Mr. Eckstein to in- clude "Samson and Delilah" in the com- ing week's repertoire and this monu- mental work has bgen scheduled for Friday night, July 30, with Giovanni Martinelli again as Samson and Alice Gentle as Delilah. This French opus has attracted two audiences this sea- son which filled every inch of available room, and its popularity continues un- abated. Martinelli does some of his finest dramatic singing as the Bibli- cal giant, and Miss Gentle is an allud- ing Delilah. Guiseppi Danise as the high priest achieves a high standard as does Leon Rothier as an Old Heb- rew. Others in the cast are Lesire De- frere, Curci and Coscia. The dances, which contribute to the spectacular features of the performance have been arranged by Ruth Page. Mr. Hassel- mans will conduct. Saturday night, "La Vida Breve", announced above, will be given its in- itial Ravinia presentation in special cel- ebration of the close of the first half of the season. Mme. Bori will be heard as Salud with Mojica as Paco. Others in the cast are Mme. Bour- skaya, D'Angelo, Defrere, Ananian, Miss Paggi, Curci and Miss Grassi. Mr. Hasselmans will conduct. Miss Louise Otis, 644 Oak street, returned this Friday from Grand De- tour, Ill, where she had been spena- ing two weeks.
