Reed of Oakland, California, meniber of the city. planning and zon- ing committee 'and first vice president elect of the National association. Cities that have not been planned show vast expenditures for necessary street widening, the study shows, cit- ing New York, Chicago and San Francisco, while cities such as Wash- l ington, D. C., Houston, and Salt Lake City, adequately planned for future expansion, have streets of sufficient width and have been saved enormous expenses. The city of Boston has spent over $50,000,000 already in correcting mis- takes due to inadequate planning, ac- cording to the study, and St. Louis has voted $80,000,000 bond issue to reconstruct city thoroughfares and form a city plan for the future. Chi- cago's program calls for over a billion dollars and has already spent over $150,000,000 on reconstruction that might have been avoided by an ade- quate city plan. Pointing out that the expenditure of funds for city planning is an in- vestment that yields profitable returns, Mr. Reed cites the increase in prop- erty values that followed the widen- ing of Michigan avenue in Chicago. After a $16,000,000 expenditure on im- provements, the increase in property values within the district was $100,- 000,000 in three years. A state meeting to encourage city planning with a view toward the uni- fied and efficient planning of the en- tire- state was-recently-held in Califor- nia under the auspices of the California Real Estate association. Mr. Reed plans to attend the In- ternational Housing and Town Plan- ning conference which will be held lat Vienna in September.
