RR an AA] ss July 31, 1926 WINNETKA TALK RAVINIA OPERA SEASON REACHES MIDWAY POINT Sixth Week Promises Repertoire of Exceptionally Attrac- tive Renditions With a repertoire containing many outstanding features, the week of Ravinia opera and concerts will be- gin the second half of the current sea- son in an auspicious manner. Louis Eckstein has scheduled six operas which hold firm positions among the favorites of American opera goers and some of which are being given by popular request. The week will open on Sunday afternoon with a concert by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, under the direction. of Eric Del.a- Marter. All seats are free for these concerts. Sunday night, August 1, Verdi's "Rigoletto," one of the best liked of the florid Italian operas, will be given, with Giovanni Martinelli singing the role of the Duke for the first time in his long career. Mr. Martinelli has already demonstrated that he is as capable of handling the lyric roles as he is those which are intensely dramatic and uch interest centers in his premiere appearance in this part. Miss Florence Macbeth, will be Gilda, a part which offers her every op- portunity for coloratura singing, while Giuseppe Danise will have the title role in which he has scored such out- standing success as to win the highest laudation of the professional critics. Otherwise in the cast are Ada Paggi, Virgilio Lazzari, Louis D'Angelo, Paolo Ananian, Anna Correnti. Fran- cesco Curci, Philine Falco and Virgilia Grassi. Mr. Papi will conduct. Rethberg in Concert On Monday night, August 2, the fourth of the series of concert-re- citals given by the Chicago orchestra in conjunction with one of the leading artists of the Ravinia opera forces as soloist, will be presented. Mme. Elisa- beth Rethberg, dramatic soprano, is to be the soloist. She will appear five times, two of her numbers being well known arias, one from "Der Frei- schutz" and the other from "Le Mar- riage de Figaro." In addition she will be heard in three song groups, the first consisting of three songs in French, the second of four songs in German, and the third of four songs in English. A splendid program has been prepared by 'the Chicago Sym- phony orchestra. Mr. DeLamarter will conduct. All seats are free for these concerts, the general admission at the gate covering everything. "La Juive," which on the occasion of its initial presentation this season aroused Ravinia patrons to an unusual pitch of enthusiasm will be given again on Tuesday night, August 3, in sixth response to popular demand. The same stellar combination of singers formerly appearing will be heard again, with Elisabeth Rethberg as Rachel, Giovanni Martinelli as Elea- zar and Leon Rothier as Brogni. In the title role Mme. Rethberg has a part which not only demands the beautiful tonal quality which she pos- sesses in abundance, but likewise a display of that dramatic power which places her at the head of the list of great dramatic sopranos. Mr. Mar- tinelli is also cast in a role which seems to have been tailored to his measure, and in which his singing, his acting and his characterization com- bine to make one of the musical and historical masterpieces. Mr. Rothier completes the trio of principals with an outstanding performance as Card- inal Brogni, this role affording the basso unusual opportunity for singing and acting. Miss Florence Macbeth has a congenial role as the Princess, which calls for a display of lyric sing- ing and Mr. Mojica is well cast as Leopold. Others in the cast are Mr. Defrere, Mr. D'Angelo and Mr. An- anian. Miss Ruth Page will appear in solo dances. Mr. Hasselmans will con- duct. Give "Manon" Wednesday Popular request also brings another performance of "Manon" by Massenet, which is scheduled for Wednesday night, August 4. Mme. Bori will be heard as the wilful runaway, a part which she interprets in an individual manner and which she makes entirely different from her delineation of the title role in "Manon Lescaut." Mr. Chamlee has one of his best roles as! young DesGrieux, utilizing his beau- tiful lyric voice and his acting ability with marked distinction. Mr. Rothier will be the elder DesGrieux, which af- fords him opportunity for fine singing. Others in the cast are Margery Max- well, Ada Paggi, Philine Falco, Jose Mojica, Desire Defrere, Louis D'- Angelo, Paolo Ananian, Carlo Coscia, Louis Derman and Virgilia Grassi. Mr. Hasselmans will conduct. Thursday afternoon, will be devoted to the weekly Children's Concert and Entertainment. The first half of the program will consist of a concert by the Chicago Symphony or- chestra, Mr. De Lamarter explaining the numbers to the children. The second half of the program will be an entertainment to be given by Henry Roethig, magician. All children, twelve years of age and under, are admitted free to these concerts. Reserved seats are free for everyone. Thursday night, August 5, will be a special occasion at Ravinia, the sea- son's first performance of "Lohengrin" having been scheduled for this time. as usual, The German libretto will be used. It is gratifying that Mme. Elisabeth Rethberg will be heard as Elsa, as Mme. Rethberg ranks as one of the world's greatest Wagnerian singers and has achieved brilliant success un- der the exacting standards of the lead- ing opera houses of Germany. It is likewise a matter of importance that Edward Johnson will have the title role. Mr. Johnson is a trained Wag- nerian singer and has sung the role of Lohengrin many times, but here- tofore has always used the English libretto. This will be the first time that he has sung this role in German. Mario Basiola, who will be heard as Telramund, will also sing German for the first time. Alice Gentle, well known as Ortrud, will have that part. Desire Defrere will be the Herald and Louis D'Angelo will appear as King Henry. Mr. Hasselmans will conduct. "Don Pasquale" one of the most amusing as well as one of the most melodious of the lighter works will be given on Friday night, August 6. Mme. Bori will again be heard as Norina, a part which demands that lightness of touch and fleetness of acting in which this singer is expert. Mr. Chamlee has a splendid lyric role as Ernesto, which includes the beautiful serenade of the last act, while Vit- torio Trevisan in the name part, has one of the great buffo roles of opera.
