This will be the second time this season that it has been nec- | essary to give extra performances at | Ravinia, which is a fair indication of | the intense interest which is being taken in Ravinia opera this year. Dur- ing the coming week two operas, which which have not been given this season, will be brought to perform- ance, these being "Pagliacci" which holds high place in the regard of all opera lovers, and "La Navarraise" one of the most dramatic of the French works. The remainder of the week's repertoire will consist of works which have been chosen with the breadth of public taste in view from among the offerings which have proved their popularity to an unusual degree. The new week will begin on Sun- day afternoon, August 15, with a con- cert by the Chicago Symphony orches- tra under the direction of Mr. De La- marter. All seats are free for these concerts. "Andrea Chenier" Sunday Sunday night, August 15, "Andrea Chenier" is to be presented with Gio- vanni Martinelli in the title role, a part which he sang for the first time in his career last week and in which he was so brilliantly successful as to leave no doubt of the soundness of the predictions of those who were of the opinion that this role would be a maserful addition to his repertoire. Elisabeth Rethberg, who as Madeleine completely won her audi- ence by the sheer beauty of her voice and the thrilling manner of her dra- matic interpretation will again have this role and Giuseppe Danise, who finds Gerrard one of the greatest parts of his repertoire. will be cast as the fevolutionist.
