Making Dinner -- PUBLIC FORUM Editor's Note: Accompanying is an open letter directed to the President and Trus- tees of the Village of Winnetka by Frank Pouloplos, Elm street fruit merchant re- garding the matter of alleged unsanitary conditions at his place of business. It is published at the request of Mr. Pouloplos. Winnetka, Ill, Sep. 1, 1926. To the PRESIDENT and TRUSTEES, Village of Winnetka. Gentlemen: Pouloplos Brothers for seventeen vears have engaged in the Village of Winnetka in the business of vending fruits and vegetables. During all these years, until recently, there has been no occasion for friction with your Health department or Health Officer, the interests of all parties being mani- festly harmonious, or, may I put it, the interest of Pouloplos Brothers in maintaining sanitary conditions is per- sonal and constant, while that of the Village may be said to be only general. Recently the duty of inspection un- der the ordinance has been improperly delegated in such a manner that a visiting nurse has been exercising this function instead of the Health Officer, Dr. Schneider. In July this nurse called at my store, took exception to the fact that a toilet cover in my basement was cracked, and also to the presence of certain ash (not garbage) recepta- cles without covers in the private alley which connects with public alley [at the rear of my store. complained of had nothing whatever Radiola Super ~ Heterodyne is the latest word in radio. See it here. Bay it here, where service is always reliable and conven- ient payments may be arranged. Stop In Today! THE BRUNSWICK SHOP What she to do with sanitary conditions, and I explained patiently that the recepta- cles in question were not mine, and that they were placed there for the use of tenants in the building. My recep- tacle was on the other side of the alley duly covered. It was insisted that I must provide covers for the cans, and the nurse left to make a report criti- icising my place and in the same re- port making similar criticisms against about a dozen Winnetka business places. I draw your attention to the fact that prejudicial notoriety has been given to my place alone, and two local newspapers have published the mat- ter, stating further that prosecution had been begun against me. I have waited for the prosecution mentioned in order to receive prompt vindication, but I now learn that (without any so- licitation from me) it has been deter- mined to "drop the prosecution," which, so far as my knowledge ex- tends, has never been started. I wish to point out there have never been unsanitary conditions about my place, either at the time in question, or at any other time. This, I believe, is sufficiently shown by the fact that my immediate neighbors are persons likely to complain of such conditions if they existed, and none of them have in fact complained. I have for a long time been paying the Village for the daily removal of all garbage, and my place is always thoroughly cleared at the close of each day. Without argument on my part you will readily see the injustice of publi- cations which could not be otherwise than damaging to my business. False statements of similar import have been given to two local newspapers, evi- dently by some village official, and without waiting for any determination of fact after a hearing. May I request your honorable body to cause due inquiry to be made to the end that the person responsible for this situation may be properly disci- plined. Respectfully yours, Frank Pouloplos 801 Elm street, Winnetka, IIL Mrs. John Eckhart, 1031 Ash street, who is at her summer home at Lake Beulah, will have as her guests over the week-end, her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.
