Torrey, 1341 Elmwood avenue, Wilmette, an authority of wide experience in transportation finances, has been appointed secretary and treasurer of the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee railroad com- pany, the North Shore line with offices in Chicago. His promotion to this po- sition at the age of 36 years is an out- standing example of rapid advance- ment in the public service field. Born at Byfield, Mass., in 1890, Mr. Torrey was graduated in 1912 from Harvard college, Cambridge, Mass., where he specialized in engineering. He served with the engineer corps of the Pennsylvania railroad from 1912 to 1914, and during the following two years was pilot engineer on valuation of the same line as ordered by the In- terstate Commerce commission. He was cost engineer with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company from 1916 to 1920. Retained at Auditor Entering the service of the North Shore line, January 1, 1921, as engineer auditor, Mr. Torrey rapidly rose to higher positions of responsibility with this company. He was promoted to valuation engineer in 1922 and became assistant treasurer in 1923. In March, 1925, he was given the double duties of assistant secretary and assistant treasurer, which offices he was holding at the time of his recent promotion. In addition to his duties with the North Shore line, Mr. Torrey is as- sistant secretary and assistant treas- urer of the Chicago Rapid Transit lines, also under the management of Samuel Insull and associates, and treasurer of the Niles Center Transit company. Despite his many official duties with these companies and their respective employe organizations, Mr. Torrey finds time to take an active part in civic and community affairs. He is president of the Wilmette Church Federation, a member of the Wilmette Chamber of Commerce and Wilmette Board of Education and is active in the affairs of the Central Lions club and the Harvard-Yale- Princeton club of Chicago.
