i 3 | October 16, 1926 WINNETKA TALK Invite Public to Chicago's Uptown Civic Concerts North shore residents have so well appreciated and supported the Up- town civic concerts which for the past two years have been given for a sea- son of six Sunday afternoons in Arcadia auditorium, near the Wilson avenue "L" station, that the Uptown Chicago Civic Music association, under the auspices of which they are enter- ing upon their third season, has reasonable assurance of another suc- cessful year. The series opens Sunday, October 31, with a program by the Russian Sym- phonic choir. The Marmoin dancers and the Chicago Symphony Players will give the second Sunday's program; Charles Hackett and Herbert Kirsch- ner, violinist, the third; Claudia Muzio the fourth; Edith Mason and the Edgewater Beach hotel orchestra, the fifth, and Cesare Formichi and Jose Eschaniz, the sixth and closing Sun- day, December 5. The history of the Uptown civic con- certs dates back to 1924 when a group of north shore citizens persuaded the Uptown Chicago Chamber of Com- merce, of which George F. Nixon was president, to sponsor the first season. It was their theory that good music by the world's great artists presented at popular prices on the north side of Chicago and not necessitating a trip to the loop would be supported by north shore residents. Miss Marian Osten, 913 Cherry street, entertained her bridge club, Tuesday, October 12, at her home. Miss Osten is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russian Drama Lectures Attract Wide Attention "Russian Drama," a series of lec- tures by Theodore B. Hinckley, are being attended by a large number of women on the north shore. This is the third year that the Drama club |of Evanston has engaged Mr. Hinck- ley for its lecture course and his popu- larity as a speaker on matters pertain- ing to the theater has constantly in- creased. Although the series this year is entitled "Russian Drama" yet ex- {cursions will be made into other fields |and the current plays of New York | and Chicago will be discussed. As each lecture is a unit in itself {members join the course at any time {bringing guests to make up for any absences which they have incurred. | The lectures are being given every | Thursday morning at 11 o'clock for {one hour at the home of Mrs. Harrison |B. Riley, 1822 Sheridan road, Evans- jton. University credit is given for the course if a satisfactory examination is passed when it is completed. Regis- trations may be made through Mrs. Carlos Andrews or Mrs. Harrison B. Riley, it is explained. Thursday, October 14, Mr. Hinckley discussed "French Culture and the Russian Theater" with special re- ference to the influence of Catherine the Great, Von Viezen and Krilov. On October 21 the subject will be "Rus- sian Drama Grows Up" and the im- portance of the names of Ostrovski Pushkin and Greboyedov will be ex- plained. Mrs. R. F.
