Perhaps those of us who knew Jo- seph Conrad only through his works will be happier in keeping at this dis- tance. In the little volume by his wife entitled "Joseph Conrad as I knew Him," it is a very different Conrad revealed. A Conrad irrascible though lovable, difficult as he was brilliant, one who may not help us to preserve the picture of the Conrad we knew. Boni & Liveright i ,,S oo. $4.00 | Where There Are Children Dare There Be Divorce? Custody Children By Everett Young Not the ordinary "brilliant society novel." It catches your emotions and you find yourself caring su- premely what happens to Clodi Dil- lon. j Henry Holt & Co. ie" THE GOLDEN BEAST By E. PHILLIPS OPPENHEIM $2.50 "It is one of the wery best of his long stories.""--The Boston Transcript. $2.00 at all Booksellers LITTLE, BROWN & CO Publishers, Boston Reviews of New Books "Cusropy CHILDREN"--Euverett Young. "Custody Children" is a very brilliant novel. We choose the word brilliant perhaps partly because the book deals with glittering things, wealth, society, pomp, display. But Mr. Everett Young, it's author, makes it very clear to us that these things have only outward glitter, that within they are a dark hollow sham. Like the kind of maca- roon--we believe it is--alluring on the outside which when you bite into it falls into a few miserable crumbling flakes of beaten egg. For seldom has an author painted society as darkly as Mr. Young does, yet he does it entirely convincingly. But we can comfort ourselves that he has taken only one layer of society, the "ultra-smart" set, the "perpetual motion addicts" as he aptly character- izes them. As the title indicates "Cus- tody Children" is a novel of divorce, though it is one of those novels which starts out to be a book with a theme and surprises itself by ending up a work of art. It reminds me, and such a compari- son means much to me, of Edith Wharton's "House of Mirth." In both there is the character of the woman who grips your emotions yet whom you must see trodden on, defeated, by a world which she can neither re- nounce or subdue. BUI nm "Trg UNEARTHLY'--Robert Hichens. In "The Unearthly" Robert Hichens has attempted a very difficult thing. He has taken as his subject, the most subtle one possible, the incredible mental or spiritual power of a man. A power such as that belonging to Peter Kharkoff cannot in literature any more than it could in life be de- scribed. It would have to be felt. So Mr. Hichens does the most plausible thing, tries to describe it through its effects on other people. But it is dif- ficult to do this without making the people appear to us ridiculous as peo- ple would be obeying an unseen sig- nal, dancing to an unheard tune. Mr. Hichens hasn't quite distilled the essence of his subject and conveyed it to us. It is lost somewhere in his bewildering and pleasing fertility of speech. "The Unearthly" is a book which will appeal most to those who mind. --Esraer Gourp LUTTE "Wrre Eastern Eves"--Ernest Poole. A Russian scientist who has been through the tragedy of the revolution, comes to a prosperous New England home to assist an American astrono- mer in his researches. He sees Ameri- can family life with Eastern eyes, and Mr. Poole gives us both the Russian's impressions of the emotional crises in the Dana household, and the real in- wardness of events. It is the astrono- mer's wife from whose special view- point the story is told, and it is her attitude of loyalty and reticence in a difficult martial situation that most amazes the Russian observer.
