October 23, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 51 Heart Disease Heads State Mortality List Heart disease, credited with 14,118 fatalities in Illinois last year, outrank- ed its nearest competitor in the busi- ness of the "grim reaper" by a margin of nearly two to one, according to statistics released by Dr. Isaac D. Rawlings, State health director. Next in order come nephritis, charged with 7,800 deaths; violence, including homi- cide and suicide, with 7,611; cancer with 7,276; pneumonia, 5900; tubercu- losis, 5,537; cerebral hemorrhage, 5,005. These seven causes of mortality were responsible for 53,247, or 65 per cent of the 81,593 deaths that occurred in the state last year. Marked increase above the 1924 figures were recorded for the mortality from heart disease, and nephritis and less pronounced advances in that from cancer and violence. Deaths {from pneumonia rose slightly while those from tuberculosis and cerebral hem- orrhage declined appreciably. "Leaving out homicides, which went up from 721 to 770, and fatal accidents, which increased from 5218 to 5,879, these statistics offer many distincly | encouraging features concerning health | conditions," said Dr. Rawlings. "Car- diac disorders, for example, are con- fined very largely to people who have reached middle and later life, In- creasing mortality from heart disease indicates, therefore, that a larger and larger number of people is escaping the contagious infections . that formerly were = respopsible for severe losses among children and * young adults. Much the same is true of nephritis, cancer and cerebral hemorrhage. AUTOMOBILES COLLIDE An automobile accident occurred on Hill road, Thursdey of last week when a Packard sedan owned by George Gonsalves of 919 Hill road and driven by his daughter, collided with a Ford truck driven by Pat Balmes. Miss Gonsalves was driving from the curb. The damage to the cars was slight, ac- cording to the report of Motorcycle Officer Rayburn.
