Whatever outward show we may make of modesty, we are all inwardly and rightly proud of Winnetka. Not to rejoice in being a part of Winnetka is to be unmindful of blessings so numerous as to make Nn praisal difficult. Are we not, however, too often content with the e sie course, that of assuming sun~rior ev- cellence in all things? Music study at Skokie Heir exact .» € € rioch+? dres it. it school is splendid. May it continue, exnand and improve! But, Skokie school is not "one of the most musical public schools extant," nor is any Winnetka public school. To assume otherwise clouds our vision and hampers prog- ress. The condition at Skokie school and at our other Winnetka public schools is better described in the con- cluding sentence of "Music Critic's" article than in his opening paragraph. The concluding sentence reads "There is much to be done, but we have a | beginning." Many years ago, Mr. Stock, one of | the great musical educators of this day, offered, and has since conducted, a series of children's orchestral con certs as an effective and sure way of instilling musical culture in the com ing generation. A second contempor- aneous series was required to take care of the children. Almost five years ago, Mrs. Marian Cotton, in charge of musical activities |at New Trier High school, conceived and placed in operation the Music Memory contest which now includes the High schools and the grade schools of parts of Chicago, most of its sub- urbs and certain nearby schools in In- diana and Wisconsin. The final con- test is held in Orchestra hall with the Chicago Symphony orchestra and Mr. Stock conducting. The high schools contest separately from the grade schools. In the high school con- test New Trier has the enviable rec- ord of two first and two second prizes. In the grade school contest Wilmette has a like record and Glencoe was twice third. Winnetka "also ran" one year and thereafter withdrew.
