December 11, 1926 WINNETKA TALK HOUREN GIVES ADVICE ON FIRE PREVENTION Cold Weather Increases Hazards and Therefore Suggests Care With Heating Devices With the advent of cold weather, the fire hazard from the operation of heat- ing plants increases greatly and Chief George Houren of the Winnetka Fire | department has the following sugges- tions to make to house-holders, which, if observed, will greatly help to prevent loss of property from fire. "In the case of coal burning furnaces, care should be taken to: "l. Have the chimney thoroughly cleaned before cold weather, partic- ularly if soft coal is used. "2 Keep all combustible materials such as waod, papers and rubbish a safe distance away from the furnace. "3. In burning up wrappings from Christmas packages, feed only a small amount at a time. "4. Keep a space of at least sixteen inches between the smoke pipe and any adjacent ceilings or wood parti- tions, unless thoroughly covered with asbestos. Examine the chimney and fireplace for possible leaks, and have all cracks or joints replastered or ce- mented. "5. Tf the furnace is controlled by a thermostat, be sure that it is in work- ing order. In the case of oil burning furnaces: "l. Do not have a damper in the flue pipe as this may cause an accum- ulation of vapor or gas. "2. Clean carbon from burner and furnace before cold weather. "3. Be sure that thermostat and au- tomatic devices for shutting off a sup- ply of oil to prevent flooding are in- spected and in perfect working order. "4, Do not store more than 275 gal- lons of fuel oil inside of the building unless the tank is placed in a fire-proof compartment of brick or 'concrete. "5. Do not have a gravity feed from any furnace oil tank containing more than 60 gallons of oil. "6. Be sure that vent pipe and filler pipe on furnace oil tanks extend to a point outside of the building. "7. The fire chief should be con- sulted before installing any fuel oil tank. . "The Fire department carries on routine inspections of all premises in the business districts, within the fire limits. Inspections will be made of residential property on request, and the chief will be glad to give suggestions and advice for the prevention of fires. "The Fire department will be glad to demonstrate its efficiency at a fire at your residence, but fires are incon- venient and expensive, not only to the householder but to the Village, and with reasonable care, can be prevented. Help stop fires in Winnetka!" Friendship Circle Plans Christmas Dance Program The regular weekly meeting of the Girl's Friendship circle took place. Tuesday, December 7, at the Commun- ity house.
