Suggest, Don't Force Proper Books Upon Children, Is Advice A child's taste for books is an evol- utionary process, according to Car} Williams of Evanston, formerly con- nected with the Country Day School of Winnetka, who gave an interesting talk on children's reading last Thursday at the meeting of the Glencoe Woman's Library club. This taste of youngsters for books is almost wholly dependent upon the [| child himself, according to Mr. Wil- [{liams. Parents can only assist and sug- gest in developing this taste, he re- minded. Reading should be voluntary, he said, and children should not be forced to read. Parents may provoke their interest in the proper sort of book by tactful approach and subtle suggestion, never urging a book too strongly. Passages may be quoted, arousing the curiosity of the child and letting him satisfy it by his own ac- quaintance with the book. The type of book the child prefers should be noted by parents, he said, and that || type--history, travel, adventure, rom- ance, biography or what--catered to with the books of the better class. He cautioned against a child's being lim- ited or overloaded with classics, re- minding that there are excellent treas- ures among the modern books not to be overlooked.
