4 ! i a A December 18, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 47 Stop This Gridder; Tiny Girl Does It| Howard Winberg, Kemper Military | school grid letter man whose phenome- | nal playing the past season not only won the coveted "K" but also the ap- | pelation of the "Fighting Swede," has | also gained marked distinction as a public speaker. Tacklers Fail to | The latter honor | was conferred at a | recent dinner given | by the Kiwanis club of Boonville, Mo., to the Kemper football squad of | 1926, at which time | Winberg spoke on | the subject, "Girls I have Met." The | Kemper News says: "He talked brief- ly but assuredly on the subject, refer- Howard Winberg ring particularly to the girl who rushed onto the gridiron to stop his drive toward the Wentworth goal line Thanksgiving day. As a pub- lic speaker it is the opinion of the writer that Winberg is a 'proverbial diamond in the rough." As an inspiration to do his subject, as a speaker, full justice, Winberg had a thrilling experience in a recent championship game which was des- cribed in the following manner in a Kansas City newspaper: "Our nomination for the toughest break--an almost 'believe it or not' break--that a fighting football player can face, is to get away for what looks like a sure run to a touchdown and then find a very pretty and fussily dressed young girl dashing straight in his path to stop his run as effective- ly as the hardest tackle from an op- posing player -would have done. "That was what happened to Win- berg, the slashing fullback for the Kemper Military academy team, in vesterday's game with Wentworth, and if the situation wasn't 'one for the book," we never saw one. Where the girl thought she was going we will never know, except that she was de- parting from here to there. An angry slash of rain hit her, the presage of the oncoming storm, and she tore straight across the field and squarely into the astonished Winberg, who hit her like the proverbial 'ton of lead. "Down the two of them fell and up galloped a horde of Wentworth Red Dragons to surround the fallen Kem- per man. There was nothing the offi- cials could do about the situation ex- cept to vote the sprinting Mr. Win- berg the hardest-luck player in cap- tivity and to see that the girl was car- ried off the field and given proper care." Her injuries comprised a fracture of the collar bone and two ribs. North Evanston Property Is Bought by Syndicate Walter G. Blake and Bertha T. "As Commander of Apollo Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar", writes Ralph (C. Kei, Chicago, "I wish to take this opportunity of calling to your attention the splendid service rendered by the North Shore Line in connection with the operation of the eight car train from Chicago to Racine and return for our visit to the 68th Annual Conclave of the Wisconsin Grand Commandery, Knights Templar. On our train were delegates from Woodlawn, Miz-* pah, Chevalier Bayard and Montjoie Commanderies. The dining car service furnished in our two special diners was all that could be wished for. Apollo Commandery has traveled from coast to coast attending the Annual Conclaves of the Order since 1847, and I think it can safely be said that no transportation agency has ever furnished a better service." -- ---- py -- - asl -- Milwaukee Every hour there's a fast North Shore Line train to Milwaukee.
