VILLAGE OF WINNETKA, : John S. Miller, President. N41-4te WANT LOW NUMBERS api Secretary of State Emmerson Receives Flood of Demands for Modest Auto Licenses for or "Please give me a low number my car--anything in two-figures three figures, but if you can't give that, at least a four-figure number." That, in substance, is the plea in hundreds letters piled up on the desk of Secretary of State Louis L. Emmerson. There are more applica- tion for low numbers this yvedr than ever before and their are fewer avail- able numbers. Under the law the holder of a low number may have it re-assigned to him provided he makes application at least 30 days prior to January 1. Owing to the increasing demand for low num- bers, very few owners failed to make their requests on December 1 and the few not called for already have beer assigned. ie prs TE In order that all 'would have an op- portunity to do se, application blanks and notices were sent by Secretary of State Emmerson eaily in November to- all holders of licenses from No. 1 to No. 20,000 and all holders of freak numbers and combination numbers. "I felt that the holder of these num- bers should be reminded of the law so that none of them would neglect filing their applications through over. sight," Secretary Emmerson said this week. "Evidently the reminder worked, for very few of the thousands who re- ceived the notices failed to have their applications here on time." In a great many instances where the owner of an automobile has died or moved from the. state, application has been filed by a relative or near friend with the statement that the number was willed to him. "While this transfer of a low number, of course, is not obligatory on him, Mr. Emmerson says he makes the assignment as re- quested, whenever it can be done. This, of course, further curtails the number of available low numbers. ; Applications in general are coming in earlier this year than ever before and the indications are, Mr. Emmerson states, that the automiobile' department on January 1 will be far ahead of its schedule in the percentage of applica- tions filed. Under the law the applications are required to be in by January 1. A large force of typists and mail sorters have been added to take care of the me of rush. The new system of handling licenses through a central cashier de- | partment and the installation of au- tomatic number machines greatly fa- cilitates the work. Kenilworth Alters Names of Two Village Streets An ordinance prescribing the renam- ing of Maple avenue, in Kenilworth between Kenilworth avenue and its northern extremity, to Sterling road and Richmond road between Cumber- land road and Ivy court to Cumnor road was passed at the meeting of the Kenilworth Village board, held last Monday evening. In both instances the sections of the roads renamed are in reality a continuance of the roads previously bearing the names and do not represent an actual renaming. Percy and John Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Davis of 766 Prospect avenue, will be among the men return- ing from Harvard to pass the vacation days. Percy is a member of the junior class at Harvard, and John is a fresh- man. : Sh. oh Ia 2 Se Wa TO
