It is a book suitable to any dramatic organ- ization in community, university or school, as well as drama, reading and study courses. Walter Pritchard Eaton has written an introduction explaining the need for such a book and giving in flattering terms Mr. Dean's qualifica- tions for writing it. The book is dedi- cated to George Pierce Baker, chair- man of the Drama department of Yale university, with whom Mr. Dean studied at the famous Forty-Seven Workshop at Harvard. It has been published by D. Appleton and company of New York. The volume of some three hundred and forty pages is the first of a series, The Drama League Library of Thea- tre Arts, and is under the general edi- torship of Mrs. A. Starr Best. It differs from others on Little Theatres hecause it does not cover all the dif- ferent divisions of play producing but agement. Other books cover in fifteen to thirty pages what Mr. Dean has de- veloped in over three hundred. Ac- cordingly the book is more full and complete than any on the market. Other books in the series will cover the subjects of playwiting, stagecraft, costuming, lighting, make-up, religious drama, drama in camps and the Mari- onette theatre. Tells Little Theatre History Many chapters are devoted to courses for literary and drama depart- ments of women's clubs, giving specific policies and programs. The book also contains the first complete history of the amateur in drama, beginning in Greece, Medieval England and France, and the beginnings in France of the present Little Theatre movement. Then it continues with the history of the movement in this country. This manual and guide book on Little Theatre administration is a work which has special value for directors of amateur dramatics and for students of American Drama and Theatre. Var- ious problems connected with the ad- ministrative side of play production, including organization, casting, stage management, publicity and financing are discussed in detail, while the duties of committees and officers are explain- ed and various administrative policies outlined. The volume contains a sam- | ple constitution. restricts itself to the policies of man- | | concern theatres of the school, Other chapters dis- cuss administrative problems as they com- munity, university, traveling, experi- mental and juvenile, as well as those connected with recreational dramatics, playshops and little theatre contests, and explains these matters thoroughly and with authority. Has Broad Experience Mr. Dean has had an extensive ex- perience in the producing field. He has been an active worker with both amateur and professional groups. He was formerly director of dramatics at the State University of Montana, di- rector of the Little Theatre of Dallas, Texas, and lecturer at the University of Michigan Summer school and the Drama League institute. He has writ- ten several short plays, "Just Neighbor- ly" being the most successful and most frequently produced. He was formerly an actor and stage manager for John Drew, Margaret Illington, Rose Cogh- lan and Crystal Herne. Last summer he was director for the Stuart Walker Stock company in Indianapolis and later at Dayton. terest not only play community and program chairmen of clubs, but to all those who are interest- ed in the American theatre, the Little Theatre movement or American dra- matic development. to those engaged in RUBY'S SHOE SALE 207% Discount On Our Entire Stock of for Women and lity Footwear dren WE HAVE ALSO PLACED ON SALE OVER 1700 PAIRS OF SHORT AND DISCONTINUED LINES OF STKEET SHOES, SPORT SHOES, EVENING AND AFTERNOON DRESS SLIPPERS .85 Values from $12.50 to E2000 '8 In Two Groups |. 10: Special Sale Prices on Hosiery and Buckles Alfred EDGEWATER_BEACH HOTEL SHOP ORRINGTO RUBY: 60 = 62 EAST WASHINGTON ST.
