January 15, 1927 WINNETKA TALK COSTUME CARNIVAL ON ICE BIG EVENT Skokie Country Club Rink Scene of Gay Event for Children; Repeat February 5 Costumes of varied types and hues flashed in colorful pageantry last Sat- urday afternoon as children entered in the Skokie Country club ice car- nival vied with one another for the honors of the day. Flashing in and out over the glass-like surface, scenes reminiscent of bygone days were brought to mind as Monsieur whirled with Fraulein and Mein Herr glided with young Mistress. It was a gala occasion. Weather conditions were ideal and a program, consisting of a grand "skatanade," numerous races, a tug of war, and fancy skating contests, had been arranged for and were conducted by Fred C. Weed, assisted by Fred- rick W. Hill, Harry Curtis, Wallace Templeton and James C. Baker. "Andy and Pete" had prepared the ice the night before and it was "plenty slick." Event No. 5--Girls' race, twelve years and over: Winner, Lucy Jane Hedberg; second, Gloria Harrington. Event No. 6--Boys' race, twelve years race, eight years Wassie Templeton, Ross twelve years McMahon ; and over: Winner, Allen Johnson; sec- ond, Jack Penfield. Event No. 7--Boys' relay, four-boy team :Winning team, Jack Penfield, John Coolidge, Allen Johnson and Bob Mec- Mahon. Event No. 8--Girls' relay, four-girl team: Winning team, Gloria Harrington, Mary McMahon, Helen Stults and Bar- bara Wilder. Event No. 9--Boys' potato race, twelve vears and under: Winner, Billy Lardner ; second, Billy Ernshaw. Event No. 10--Girls' potato race, tweive years and under: Winner, Helen Stults; second, Virginia Graham. Event No. 11--Girls' costume prize: Winner, Janet Hall; second, Nancy de- Beers; third, Ann Binkley. Event No. 12--Boys' costume prize: Winner, Teddy Templeton; second, Ro- land and Sammy Carson. Event No. 13--Boys' tug-of-war, six- boy team: This event was won by team captained by Bob Miller. Event No. 14--Girls' figure skating: Winner, Mary MaMahon. Event No. 15--Boys' figure skating: Winner, Bob McMahon. The next costume carnival will be held February 5. It is planned to have some- thing in the nature of a "Hard-Time" carnival. Details will be announced later. Place for More Pupils in Art League Classes George Oberteuffer, teacher of Life at the Chicago Art Institute, formerly of the Salon d'Autumn, Paris, France, conducted his first classes in painting for members of the North Shore Art league, at Community House, Win- netka, Wednesday and Thursday eve- nings, January 12 and 13. These les- sons are in a series of twelve, a nom- inal charge being made. A few va- cancies are left for active members of the league to fill, it is said, and any- one desiring information, or wishing to register, is asked to call Mrs. J. W. F. Davies at Winnetka 293. Julian Woodward, son of the Arthur H. Woodwards of 685 Ardsley road, spent the holiday season with his par- ents. He is at present studying for his Doctor's degree at Columbia uni- versity. In the boys' lightweight division three games were played on Thursday, January 6. The Reds won from the Tigers by a score of 6 to 3; the Eagles were victorious over the Goats, 7 to 2; and the Lions defeated the Maroons by a score of 6 to 2. In the boys' middle and heavy weight divisions the contests are as fol- lows: Friday, January 7, Wildcats 14-- Shamrocks 1; Pontiacs 3--Demons 2; Eagles 6--Celtics 5. Tuesday, January 11, Pontiacs 1--Eagles 1; Shamrocks 14--Celtics 0. Girls' lightweight teams played as follows : Wednesday, January 5, Streaks 12--Torpedoes 10; Okehs 16-- Blackbirds 14; and Canaries 10-- Flashes 8.
