Not until the return of Mrs. Edward Hines from abroad, about September 17, will plans be made for the formal opening and tea which will present the club to the public; but registrations are now coming in for rooms, and it is expected that the building will be occupied September 15. Women Busy, Too Workmen, putting the final touches on the walls and floor, installing the elevators and other mechanical equip- ment, are no busier than the women supervising the outfitting. Mrs. Harry Boyd Hurd, Mrs. M. P. Cromling and others who are working on Mrs. Hines' board of directors and building committee, are putting in long hours of wearying labor in their effort to get the job done as soon and as well as possible. Every day finds them at their task, unpacking furniture, tug- ging it about, lifting mattresses, shov- ing things in place and getting all in readiness. Its location in Oak avenue, south of Davis street and next door to the Catholic Woman's club, permits sur- roundings that are highly attractive. Trees arch before it and about it, and in all the four stories and English basement floor sunlight pours bounti- fully in. Windows all have the charm of small panes. There is a general impression of rich, soft interior in the walnut woodwork and furnishings and the brown blocked composition floors. Walls are tinted in blue, pink or tan on the bedroom floors, and in the great living room a soft, lovely green blends walls, woodwork and window- casings. Give Beautiful Prints Furniture is going into place in the bedrooms--Ilarge, capacious dressers, single steel beds with excellent springs and mattresses, beautiful little writing tables with deep drawers, all of charm- ing walnut finish. Up at the windows will soon go the beautiful English prints which an important firm of decorators is giving and hanging as its gift to the clubhouse--a service made possible only through its ap- preciation of Mrs. Hines' influence. Down in the English basement din- ingroom the decorating'is being com- pleted. Pillars and castings are paint- ed in soft Chinese blue with touches of gold. A Colonial wallpaper has been hung and Colonial chandeliers of crystal and pewter swing from ropes of soft blue velvet. Equipment to excite any good house- keeper is being installed in the com- modious kitchen--cafeteria provision for breakfasts, the only meal at which residents will serve themselves; sev- eral frigidaire units, a bread mixer, great range and ovens, a dish washer, a potato peeler, and considerable other labor-saving furnishings. The completing of the clubhouse is being impatiently awaited by the large number of prospective residents, em- ployed women between the ages of 20 and 35. Illinois ranks third among the states in the manufacture of millinery ond lace goods. One hundred and sixty- two plants employ 5,738 persons, sal- aries and wages, $7,670,000; value of products yearly about $23,750,000.
