Shoe Shining Service DOUGLAS SMITH DIES Noted Philanthropist, Resident of Win- netka, Passes Away While Under- Going Operation at St. Lukes Funeral services for Douglas Smith, president of the board of directors of the Pepsodent company, who passed away at St. Luke's hospital while un- dergoing an operation for gallstones last Tuesday, were conducted from the family residence, 915 Sheridan road, Winnetka, at 2 o'clock Thursday after- noon. Mr. Smith had survived a similar at- tact on October 20 and was released from the hospital on October 31. Last Sunday night he was seized with an- other attack and was taken to the hospital for the operation. Death was due to a rupture of the right ventricle of the heart, according to the verdict of the coroner's jury, while the oper- ation was being performed by Dr. J. A. Capps and Dr. L. L. McArthur. Mr. Smith was born in Highland Park December 9, 1861. For a number of years latterly he had divided his residence between Chicago and Cali- fornia, and had returned from the west only a few days before his first illness. In recent years Mr. Smith had been interested in various philanthropies and in 1925 he made a gift of $1,000,- 000 to the University of Chicago foun- dation for medical research, now known as the Douglas Smith founda- tion, which specifically provided for payment of salaries of persons en- gaged in conducting research in the school of medicine. Mr. Smith was treasurer for seven- teen years of the Allendale associa- tion, which had as its interest the schooling and training of boys, and was president of the Hadley corres- pondence school for the blind at Win- netka. He was a member of the Chi- cago, the City and the Indian Hill clubs here; the Midwick and Avon- dale country clubs of Pasadena, Cal, and the Monterey Peninsula Country club of Pebble Beach, Cal. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ema- roy June Smith, whom he married at Oak Park in 1886; and three children: Kenneth Gladstone Smith, president of the Pepsodent company, of Chi- cago; Mrs. June Kieth Slater of Pel- ham Manor, N. Y.; and Mrs. Florence Clifford Ellis of San Mateo, Cal. Fredirick D'Aix of Kenilworth has gone to his mine in New Mexico. 797 ELM ST.
