January 14, 1928 WINNETKA TALK BOYS NEED CLOTHING Arden Shore Issues Appeal for Used Garments for Prospective Little "Business Men" at Rest Camp Boys at the Arden Shore Rest camp who are soon to be "graduated" and sent out into the big city to seek em- ployment, are in dire need of present- able clothing, according to Anne Belle Ferrier, superintendent at the camp near Lake Bluff. "S. O. S., please," begins a letter addressed to Mrs. Marcus D. Rich- ards of 1240 Tower road, Winnetka, first vice-president of the Arden Shore association, by Miss Ferrier. "Miss Elliott and I have suddenly waked up to the fact that we have boys ready to graduate and they have no clothing fit to wear when they go down to ask for a position. "Mr. Richards will tell you that no boss is going to take a frowsy, ragged urchin into his employ if he can get a neat, trim fellow--even if the latter does not have such rosy cheeks and shiny eyes as our boys have. "I wonder if it isn't a good time, right after the holidays, to send out an appeal to all the villages to beg for cast-off garments for the boys? We have received very little to date, and what we have received is causing a small riot, because so many boys wanted the same thing. "Graduation is set for January 19th, so we'll have to work fast." To those unfamiliar with the Boys' Rest camp at Arden Shore, a word of explanation will not be amiss. These boys, brought to the camp in the winter season, are taken from the Chicago tenement areas, and come to Arden Shore at the recommendation of the Chicago board of education. They are under-nourished boys, old enough to work and assist in the sup- port of their families, but seriously handicapped by reason of ill health. Arden Shore nurses them back to health and "graduates" them only af- ter they are physically fit to accept positions. They are poor boys who richly deserve a lift.
