& i AE January 21, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 33 New Trier Cage Squads Divide With Morton Men By Hal Burnett The New Trier cage teams split a pair of games with Morton High at Cicero last Friday when the Heavies lost 23-17, and the Lights won 23-16. Both games were hotly contested, the score in the heavyweight game stand- ing a tie 15-15 at the end of the third quarter. Morton played the slow deliberate game that won them the National championship last year. Fencl, right forward for Morton, was the star of the game with his clever foot work and accurate shooting. He would take the ball from Barton and dribble through the New Trier defense for short shots at the basket that usually sank. The New Trier team was clearly off form, playing their poorest shooting game since their defeat by Proviso, December 21. Although holding the ball for the first three quarters they couldn't make the baskets that have been characteristic of other New Trier teams. Maurie Nelson, who scored seven baskets the week before, didn't make a shot while Miller, another high point man, scored only one. Steve Plowman and Chicken Mark- ley were the only boys who played their usual game, Markley holding the Mor- ton forwards to no score during the first half while Plowman scored two long shots from the center of the floor. Captain John Sheldon contributed two baskets to New Trier"s score but fell down in guarding, allowing the Mor- ton players to slip the ball by him when they were stalling in the last quarter. The heavyweight game started out fast and was tied 8-8 as the quarter ended. In the second quarter Mor- ton slipped over 3 points on New Trier, the score at the half being 13-10 in their favor. In the third quarter Mor- ton opened a successful stalling game, passing the ball back and working it up again to shoot only when there was an opportunity for a sure basket. 'This type of playing was successful in the last quarter, and the Cicero team had little trouble in getting a lead and hold- ing it. In the lightweight game Saxton con- tributed 12 points to an easy victory. After getting a seven point lead the North Shore team let down and kept just ahead of the Morton bunch, finally coming out with the score 23-16. Linus and Stan Smith helped their team to win by close guarding and fast floor work. Box score: Heavyweights MORTON 23 NEW TRIER 17 GFP.
