WINNETKA TALK March 3, 1928 Pointing the Way for the Community and the Nation UR Community House, the first of its kind in the country, and originator of the name "Community House,' is no longer an experiment. Its success in the 17 years of its existence has been so pronounced that its plan has been widely copied in similar com- munities throughout the country. Without Community House, Winnetka simply wouldn't be 'Winnetka. It belongs to everybody. Its doors are open to all, with- out distinction of race, creed or any other affiliation. Here, the stranger may find a ready welcome; the boy and girl find a useful outlet for the abundance of energy that belongs to youth; and men and women establish contacts that make for higher life in the village as a whole. In the attendance figure of 136,000 chalked up for 1927, the use- fulness of Community House is proved. On the average, the house was used 13 times per capita during the year, with casual attendance unrecorded. 130 different groups have made their head- quarters in the building. Many of these would never have been formed without such a place of meeting, and the work they are doing has benefited the whole community.
