March 3, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Housewarming Edition MAMMOTH TANK HOLDS OIL FOR HEATING PLANT Braun Brothers Company Keeps Three Thousand Gallon Tank "Loaded" at All Times "IL" is a word that spells warmth and comfort in the Lloyd Hollister Inc. Building plant. Following the trend of modern times an oil heating system has been installed in the new building. A three thousand gallon fuel oil tank supplying the automatic heat- ing plant and insuring uniform tem- perature throughout the establishment, is serviced by the Braun Brothers Oil Co., with offices in Wilmette, Win- netka and Highland Park. This com- pany has 150,000 gallon storage tanks at Northfield, west of Winnetka and tanks of 80,000 gallons capacity just west of Highland Park. The company maintains a fleet of eight Sterling tank trucks. Phil H. Braun is President of the company; Carl L. Braun, vice-presi- dent and Robert F. Doepel, secretary- treasurer. Mr. Doepel is manager of the Winnetka plant, with C. M. Braun, as assistant and the Highland Park plant is under the management of Carl L. Braun. Big Boiler Located in Sub-basement Is Ideal Heat Producer WEEN the cold biting winds of win- ter and low temperatures force- fully call our attention to .the value and necessity of warmth, the matter of heating to protect health, and pro- mote greater business efficiency be- comes a matter of paramount impor- tance. That's why Lloyd Hollister Inc, gave much consideration and thought to the heating system before taking the final step which resulted in the installation of a Heggie-Simplex boiler in the new publishing plant. In the sub-basement of the new plant will be found the Heggie-Simplex No. 317, which is most modern in design and construction. The capacity of the boiler is 7,000 square feet, and it is of the dial code type. The heating surface is 550 square feet, with a grate area of 20.7 feet. The height of the water line is 78% inches for the boiler which is 91 inches in height. The width is 52 inches and length 115 inches. The width of the firebox is 46 inches and length 83 inches. The approximate weight of the boiler is 9,918 pounds. Some boiler? Yes, and some heat! Steam Heat System Provides Warmth for Big Building HEN the time came to consider the heating plant for the new home of Lloyd Hollister Inc., a careful survey of the areas to be heated and the specific needs of the departments was made by R. E. Kilby, president of the Northwestern Heating and Plumb- ing company of Evanston. This com- pany supervised the installation. The system is of the steam type. Six and one-half inch pipes are used as leads to carry the steam from the boiler to the distributing pipes which carry it to radiators and other heating units. The radiators were manufac- tured by the American Radiator com- pany and are of various styles. The temperature of the air through- out the entire plant is governed by thermostats placed at various points. Over 1,500 lineal feet of pipe rang- ing from 1 inch to 6%, inches in dia- meter, were used in the system as steam lines, the radiators in the office supplying more than 1,700 square feet of direct radiation. NEW HEAT DEVICE Thermodine Unit Heaters Designed for Big Plants Used in Compos- ing and Press Rooms EB this age of inventions there has come to the front a new heat trans- fer device--a new system which was particularly designed for factory or plant, where there is necessity for heating large spaces--and when cast- ing about for a way to efficiently heat the big composing and press rooms Lloyd Hollister Inc., showed no hesi- tancy in selecting the Thermodine Unit Heater. This is a new method of heating, in fact it has been developed in the last few years. The Thermodine consists of three major parts, a condenser as- sembly, a manifold and frame assembly and a fan motor assembly. In appear- ance it resembles an automobile radia- tor and some of the same principles, we are informed, have been incorpo- rated. One advantage to be noted is that it is a space saver, for the heater is attached to ceiling or wall pipe. There are other important features. One of these is flexibility. The heat- ing unit may be turned in any direc- tion. Another is that the Thermodine may be used in warm weather as a cooling system, the motor driven fan circulating the cool air. Lloyd Hollister Inc., has found that nine Thermodines are sufficiently ample to heat the big spaces in the publishing plant. There are five model 701, two model 501 and two model 201 units. The two model 501 units are of the silent type. Thermodine Unit heaters are manu- factured by the Modine Manufactur- ing company of Racine, Wis.
