Thor VER SHOP 630 Church St., Evanston Greenleaf 231 Returns April 8 Giovanni Martinelli, Ravinia opera favorite, who recently appeared in re- cital at the New Trier High school auditorium under the sponsorship of the Winnetka Music club, will present a recital in the Auditorium theater, Chicago, Sunday afternoon, April 8. Martinelli is regarded by eminent critics as the true successor to the great Caruso. He has won this place of acclaim by dint of sheer merit and without the aid of special press agent- ing. He was accorded an ovation in his recent appearance on the north shore. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie W. Richards of Northbrook announce the birth of a son, Leslie William, Jr. on Sunday, February 26, at the Highland Park hospital. Mrs. Richards was formerly Miss Violet Andrews of Hubbard Woods. Plan New Type of Theatrical Fare for North Shore The north shore is to lead the rest of America in being the first to present a new type of theatrical fare when "Theatron" offers four classic revivals and the premier of a new play next season at the Evanston Woman's club. Independent of Broadway, Shrafts- bury avenue, et al, "Theatron" will revive classic plays that had formerly to be enjoyed in the study, since, it is pointed out, they were beyond the audiences of the commercial theater and the resources of the amateur. Then, too, when it finds one worthy, "Theatron" will give some new play a premier. This type of repertory company is common throughout Furope, the Com- edie Francaise being a notable exam- ple; but until now, it has been un- known in this country. A company of competent actors will be seen through the season as changing casts permit, under the direction of one who will both design and stage the productions. The subscription season opens im November with two performances of Farquhar's dashing Restoration come- dy, "The Recruiting Officer." Follow- ing at feur-week intervals come Ibsen's "When We Dead Awaken," at the present time unknown to American audiences; William Dean Howell's farce, "Hors d'Oeuvres"; Lessing's "Minna Von Barnhelm"; and the pre- miere of a new play as the final offer- ing. The program also announces the first American production of Maurice Bouchor's marionette play, "Noel, or the Mystery of the Nativity," which will be given special performances at Christmas time for the subscribers. Mrs. Douglas Smith of 915 Sheridan road has returned from a two months' visit in California. She was first with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Ellis, in San Mateo, and then went on to Pasadena to spend about a month. --_--Q-- Alpha Omicron Pi sorority held its formal initiation at the sorority house last week.
