April 7, 1928 WINNETKA TALK PROPOSE MEMORIAL FOR TWO CIVIL WAR HEROES W. A. Hadley Tells Legionnaires of Winnetkans Who Gave Their All in "Sixties" Few people in Winnetka, perhaps, are aware of the fact that the Village, back in the early "sixties" with a popu- lation of 150 or less, sent forth its quota for service in the Civil War, two of whom never returned. These patriotic heroes who gave their all for their country, were George Wilson and Charles Davis, and the suggestion has been made that it would be fitting that the village honor their memory by the erection of some sort of a monument or memorial, in one of the several parks for which the Winnetka of today is famed, far and near. Suggested by '-W. A. Hadley It was during an address before the members of Winnetka Post No. 10, American Legion, Monday evening, by William A. Hadley, head of the Hadley Correspondence School for the Blind, 584 Lincoln avenue, that these early historical facts were related and the suggestion made to honor the memory of these two men, even at this late day. No action was taken by the Post, but all members were impressed with the fact that the Village, which in later wars has shown its patriotism in true form, may point to the far distant past, in the earliest days of the village, with the same justifiable pride, and out of the suggestion by Mr. Hadley, it is said, may come definite plans for the memorial he proposed. The men from Winnetka who gave their lives in the Civil War, Mr. Had- ley said, were George Wilson and Charles Davis. = The former was a surgeon's assistant in the Navy, and died of fever contracted while in the service. He was buried at Newberne, North Carolina. The latter was stricken with small-pox while in the service and died in a hospital. His place of burial is not known, Mr. Hadley said. Mr. Hadley, who had been invited to address the Post on the subject of his correspondence school for the Blind, took advantage of the opportunity to relate the Civil War history above re- ferred to. He said he had had the matter in mind for a long time, and this he considered was an appropriate place and an opportune time to bring up the subject. Mancel T. Clark, Resident 21 Years, Dies of Pneumonia Mancel T. Clark, of 76 Locust road, president of the Jewell Paint and Var- nish company of Chicago and a resi- dent of Winnetka for more than 21 vears, passed away at the Evanston hospital from pnéumonia last Sunday. Funeral services were conducted from the Rosehill cemetery chapel on Tues- day. Burial was at Rosehill. Mr. Clark, who was 53 years of age, was born in Chicago and had been as- sociated with the firm of which he was president, for more than thirty years. He was intensely interested in the af- fairs of the community and actively participated in the promotion of things of civic interest. He was a member of the Indian Hill club and was at one time a member of the board of di- rectors and treasurer of that organiza- tion. Mr. Clark is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Clark, a son, Man- cel T. Clark, Jw, and two brothers, Alson S. of Pasadena, Cal, and Ed- win H. Clark of Winnetka. Ss A Complete Line of 9A. M. To6 P. M.
