April 14, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 21 SANE CHILD GUIDANCE ADVISED FOR PARENTS Mrs. Beatrice Ensor, English Educator, Lectures at Nation- al Kindergarten College In a lecture on "The Child's Faulty Adaptations," given last Tuesday at the National Kindergarten and Ele- mentary college, Mrs. Beatrice Ensor, English educator, advised parents to familiarize themselves with the new discoveries in the field of psychology and education, but to be careful how they try them out on their children. She also stressed the importance of maintaining a sane, well-balanced point of view in the midst of the multiplicity of new and sometimes conflicting theories. "Practically every child presents problems in one direction or another, and individual psychology, which is the basis of the new education, attempts to take into account the possibilities, capacities, strength and weaknesses of the individual and pro- vide an environment which will help him to develop along the finest lines. Our aim as parents and teachers is so to study the situation that we may provide the kind of environment which will produce spontaneous, harmonious, all-around development of the child's nature. Prevent Mal-Adjustment "Our attempt is to prevent mal- adjustment, rather than to remedy it after it has occurred. We recognize the importance of the early years of the child's physical life and the 'de- velopment of a healthy emotional life is equally important. 'It is the duty of every mother to help the child cut the links which bind them together, to make the child independent, and if she fails you have an entirely mal-adjusted adult. Mrs. Ensor suggested the many problems of adjustment between differ- ent children in the family and em- phasized the fact that the parents' job is to balance human nature and try to see that the relationships are fairly evenly balanced and that each child is given an opportunity to develop. She discussed three types of children --the active, independent child, the high-strung emotional child, and the questioning child who must have a reason for everything, and suggested the very different types of treatment which must be used with them. "When mal-adjustments appear we do not punish the child--we know we have to go deeper and find the cause and remedy this, and then the external manifestation will gradually disappear." In closing Mrs. Ensor spoke briefly on the New Era Fellowship, which is endeavoring to bring together the pro- gressive features.in education from all parts of the world.
