Hubbard Woods | Public Forum On awakening at dawn this morn- ing I had a real thrill. Among the bird chorus, which performed every morn- a | ing in my yard, I heard a new note, that of the whippoorwill. Lest I might be dreaming, with ear attuned I waited to hear that call, and sure enough it was Mr. Whippoorwill, twice in close proximity to my window and a little later over the open spaces of Indian Hill golf grounds. This is my first ex- perience with this rare visitor on the north shore. Three years ago this July at Coloma, Michigan, near the lake, each evening on the stroke of 8, one came to the coping of the back entry of the farmhouse and through the dusk I had my first acquaintance with this rather odd looking visitor. His call was insistent, each note trip- ping over the other. If one were walking after nightfall this bird would dart swiftly before him close to the ground, This adds one more to the list of feathered friends that come be- cause fresh water and food are always where birds can find them. TI left this jingle in the house guest book at Coloma. In the early morn, when the sun comes up, The Bob White calls from a road-side stump. At the hour of noon, when the sun is high, A bluebird darts athwart the sky. Over the hills, tho' not far away, The whippoorwill sings at the close of day.
