16 WINNETKA TALK May 5, 1928 Women Voters News The Winnetka League of Women Voters was very sorry to have Mrs. William G. Hibbard retire as director of the fourth Region of the National league. Mrs. Hibbard has served the National league most faithfully and in addition has been a great inspira- tion to the local Winnetka League. She still retains the first vice-presi- dency of the Illinois League and will be therefore still active in League af- fairs. Mrs. Hibbard's successor, who is Mrs. Charles Curtis, has the unique distinction of having been the first woman in the diplomatic service. As Miss Lucile Atcherson she was for- merly third secretary of the American Legation in Panama and was prior to that third secretary of the Amer- ican Legation in Switzerland. She re- signed from diplomatic service last 'year upon her marriage with Mr. Curtis. The eighth national convention of the League of Women Voters, held in Chicago last week, was the largest convention that the I.eague has ever held. Nearly every state delegation was full, and the large number of visitors nearly filled the ballroom of the Palmer House. While the adoption of the program for study and legislation, which will be the guide for League work the next two years, received the larger share of attention of the convention, such important matters as organiza- tion and finance were by no means neglected. One of the most debated subjects was the question of working hours for women in industry. The national committee, headed by Mrs. Avis Ring Ninabuck of Winnetka, recommended that the League work for 48-hours week legislation. By a close vote the convention voted in favor of retaining the 8-hour day plat- form. The gala event of the week was the finance banquet on Friday night. Among the Winnetkans present were Mrs. William G. Hibbard, Mrs. Her- mon Butler, Mrs. B. F. Langworthy, Mrs. Emory Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Durham, Mr. and Mrs. James Houghteling, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Elting, Mr. and Mrs. Donald McPherson, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Mc- Ilvaine, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Ferry, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ninabuck, Mr. and Mrs. Gross T. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. John Van der Vries. Miss M. Louise Robinson, art teach- er of the Joseph Sears school in Ken- ilworth, was confined to her home sev- oral davs this week by a severe cold. Mrs. Hermon Butler on National Y. W. C. A. Board Mrs. Hermon B, Butler of Winnetka was elected to the national board of the Young Women's Christian associa- tion at the convention just closed in Sacramento, Cal. Mrs. Butler has been active in the Chicago Y.W.C.A. for a number of years, serving as president of the metropolitan board of directors 1925-1926. In January of this year she was succeeded by Mrs. William I,. Hodgkins. Mrs. Charles W. Gilkey of Chicago was re-elected first vice-president of the National Y.W.C.A. at the Sacra- mento meeting.
