26 WINNETKA TALK May 5. 1928 Walter Stelzel in Eighth Year as Pro at Playfield Walter Stelzel, who spent the past winter at Lake Worth, Fla., returned to Winnetka this week in time for the formal opening of Skokie Playfield Golf course, today Mr. Stelzel is entering on his eighth year as "Pro" at Skokie Playfield. Last year was the best season in the history of the course, but from the present early outlook, this year will eclipse all previous records there, both in in- terest and attendance. During his stay in the South, "Pro" Stelzel was associated with the Lake Worth Country club. He came up to Indianapolis, Ind., three weeks ago, since which time he has been visiting his parents. Phi Kappa Sigma will entertain at a mothers' and fathers' dinner on Sun- day, May 13. Public Forum Why Winnetka is always keeping abreast of the times and is known all over the United States as a model vil- lage. The Winnetka Spirit turns the trick. This wonderful force was started many years ago and it has kept growing stronger with the growth of our Vil- lage. It built by private subscription a $350,000 pubilc school--the Skokie school--the one and only case of its kind known in the country. That cer- tainly was something to be proud of, for in no other way could Winnetka at that time have provided for the in- crease in the school population of the village. Many other similar cases might be cited as the result of the Winnetka Spirit. Just now it is show- ing up in beautifying the library grounds. First, the Winnetka Garden club decided it would like to have the privilege of furnishing shrubs and flowers for the library grounds and employed Roy West, the well known member of the firm of Simonds and West, landscape architects, to direct the planting and select the shrubs and flowers. Mr. West also volunteered to help in laying out the grounds in the most artistic manner without charge for his services, Next, plowing and grading had to be done and along comes Lawrence J. Hayes, head of the big teaming company of that name. After hearing what was necessary to be done Mr. Hayes volunteered to do the work--and there was quite a lot of it too--at cost, without profit, be- cause it was for the benefit of our Public library. That's true evidence of the Winnetka Spirit. --H. A. deWindt ---- =] C4 FOUR DOOR COUPE { 1445 F.O0.B.
