44 WINNETKA TALK May 12, 1928 U. of C. to Be Scene of Great Prep Track Events The country's biggest track meet, the twenty-fourth annual national track interscholastic at the University of Chicago, will be open 0 the public free of charge again this year. More than a thousand of the nation's star prep athletes will compete in the high school and academy sections. The meet will be held June 1 and 2 at Stagg Field. General Douglas McArthur, presi- dent of the Olympic committee, has designated the Stagg interscholastic as an Olympic tryout. Winning perform- ances in the meet are equal to most of the marks of intercollegiate compe- tition, and in past years the winning achievements have been of Olympic standard. Lee Barnes, now of South- ern California, went to the 1924 Olym- pic meet after winning the Stagg Interscholastic. Practically all of the college stars have won their first national recognition in the Stagg meet. Mrs. Frederick H. Glen- coe, pianist, is to appear at Re- cital Hall, Fine Arts building, on Monday evening in a recital under the auspices of the Society of Ameri- can Musicians. Miss Manchester, who is a pupil of Howard Wells has achieved much fame in recent months. Last week she appeared in concert at Urbana, Ill, with Miss Kathryn Witwer, the noted opera singer of Gary, Ind. Miss Manchester resides at 403 Grove street. Mrs. Carl R. Latham Is Chosen President of University Guild Mrs. Carl R. Latham; formerly of Wilmette, prominent in Northwestern university alumnae and Evanston club circles, was elected president of the University. guild Monday. Mrs. James Lardner, who has been the guild's president, was made first vice-president, and the other two vice-presidents elected are Mrs. E. Crane Wilson and Mrs. Martin M. Gridley.
