May 19, 1928 WINNETKA PALK 51 Shore Theaters Novarro's "Across to Singapore" Comes to Norshore Sunday Norshcre theater patrons will be delightfully entertained when they make their weekly visit to their fa- vorite movie-house next week, begin- ning Sunday, May 20, for Al Kvale, the Jazz Clown, is preparing what he believes to be one of the most har- monious and colorful of any presen- tation he has heretofore offered to his fans. The stage show will be entitled "Mission Bells," and it will be a combination of soothing melody and dancing feet. Al and his clowns are all set to blast forth with their entranced intsruments, in a toe-tick- ling array of torrid syncopation and rhythm. It will be a colorful production, in- cluding a good bit of the good old fashioned harmony, and spiced with the modern jazz. The combination of the two classes of music will be a delightful alternative, and Al will clown as he never clowned before. His magnetic personality, which drew whole-hearted admiration from his fans even while he was with Paul Ash's Merry Mad gang, still continues to draw enthusiasm, and Al has be- come the idol of the Northwestern campus. His Merry Collegians are a group of jazzical madcaps and he leads them with a reckless misdemeanor which always draws forth ice-hot har- mony. Ramon Novarro, co-starring with Joan Crawford, in an all-star cast, comes to the screen in his latest vehicle since the "Student Prince," en- titled "Across to Singapore." It is an odd story of sailors ond the sea, with beautiful Miss Crawford as an innocently alluring maiden, the daugh- ter of 'a wealthy ship-owner. Novarro is the young brother of a family of sea-going men, whose rough hrutality is the talk of the marine highwavs. Ernest Torrence and Frank Currier are included in the cast of this un- usual story. : 1 "High School Hero" at Community House May 25 The two "leading lights" on the Com- munity House program for the coming week are "Wife Savers" for Tuesday and "The High School Hero" for Fri- day. "Wife Savers' 'is another of the Wal- lace Beery-Raymond Hatton films with Zazu Pitts and Ford Sterling in the supporting cast. Much like their previous efforts. "The High School Hero" is a youth- ful, refreshing story of "prep" school life with a nice cast of youngsters. Charlie Paddock plays the role of coach and Sally Phipps and Nick Stuart are starred. Now the secret's out. The film was first re- leased with the title "Under the Black Flag" and all advance info has been given under that name. It's a M-G-M film, featuring Flash, "the wonder dog," who "gets the World told" that the "nuts" did their share during the fracas in France. Ralph Forbes and Marceline Day render excellent sup- port. "The Showdown" is a paramount production. It's an excellent picture of life in the depressing oil fields. George Bancroft and Evelyn Brent do splendid work. "The Patent Leather Kid" has been selected for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. May I repeat myself? "Pleased to recommend that you see je "The Patsy," film adapation of the stage play, is a delightful farce-comedy with Marian Davies in the lead role. Absurd but good. Teatro billing for Thursday and Friday. : Lon Chaney is busy on his next morsel for the "terrorists." Calls it "Fasy. Money" and has signed Anita Page for the feminine lead. --o0-- Lucy Doraine of Hungary, it is re- ported, has been signed by Paramount and will, perhaps, take the place of Pola Negri. a ARs GEORGE BANCROFT *"The Showdown" Musicale at 3:45 p. m.
