May 26, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Conference Track Stars Compete for Honors at Stadium Spirited rivalry among the specta- tors as well as competitors will be in evidence at the Western Conference Track and Field championships to be held at Dyche stadium, Northwestern university this Saturday afternoon. Alumni bodies of each of the ten competing schools are making a de- termined effort to outdo the other in both numbers and enthusiasm. Fach of the ten sections are to be decorated in the colors of the schools. Flags and bunting will be employed in generous amounts to make the stadium a gay," colorful scene. Those in charge of the various alumni groups are Miss Opal Powers, University of Chicago; Irvin W. Bar- nett, University of Illinois; J. Frank Lindsay, University of Indiana; Rob- ert Showers, University of Iowa; M. H. Gerlach, University of Michigan; G. E. Husby, University of Minneso- ta; Max Hayford, Northwestern wuni- versity; E. W. Schmunk, Ohio State; B. R. Gebhart, Purdue university; B. I. Peterson, University of Wisconsin. Northwestern university's band of 100 pieces will be on hand ready to play the songs of each of the schools. Glenn Bainum, band director, has been busy with the bandsmen getting them ready for the occasion and promises a lively musical program throughout the afternoon. Followers of Illinois and Iowa will be out in force since these two teams are regarded as strong possibilities to finish first. The Illini won the indoor meet last winter by a close advantage over Iowa but with the additional field events the Hawks are conceded a good chance of cutting down this lead. Northwestern, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin are expected to pile up a number of points but hardly have the reserve strength to win sufficient points to place out in front. Indiana will be represented by its strongest team in years while Purdue, Chicago and Minnesota are all represented by a number of individual stars who will figure in the scoring. Preliminaries were to be held Friday afternoon and the finals will get under way Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the mile run. The pole vault and shot put trials will start at 1 and 1:30, respectively.
