May 26, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 51 in Town and County y i=l "Nice Evening," Says Sam to Ed; "Almost Spanish," Adds Ed Mr. Sam Meyers, the manager of Teatro del Lago, met Mr. Ed Crush, our advertising man, at the door of the theater the other night and re- marked that it was a nice evening. Mr. Crush (who heard about Spain over the radio and completed his edu- cation at a movie travelogue concern- ing the country) replied that it was almost a Spanish evening and (looking over the full house that was evidently according to Mr. Meyers a "large evening") remarked that the public was enjoying the Spanish evening at a Spanish theater. Not having even had the opportunity to see a Spanish scene on an adver- tising poster, I can't enlarge on their conversation very much. However, if I were in Spain the evenings are ex- actly as I would like Spanish eve- nings to be, not to mention the thea- ter. But to return to movies: Teatro has lined up quite a nice program for the. coming two weeks upon which I can and will proceed to enlarge. "A Night of Mystery" will conclude this week. Adolphe Menjou takes the leading role in the opus, which is one of the best vehicles he has had. Evelyn Brent, Nora Lane, and William Col- lier, Jr. are among the supporting cast. The picture is based on Sardou's French play, "Captain Ferreol." This Sunday Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus," will offer a three ring attrac- tion. Produced with Charlie's extreme care, it represents one of the best pic- tures ever screened and will delight Ma, Pa and all of the kids. "Love Me and the World Is Mine" will be featured Monday and Tuesday. It's a story of war time Vienna with a Daddy Browning romance between Mary Philbin and Henry B. Walthall. Betty Compson is the big thing in the show. W. C. Fields is a crook who under- stands that men handle the invest- ments and women handle the men in "Fools for Luck." Chester Conklin knows he's a crook but can't figure how to convince his wife and daugh- ter. He doesn't need to. Wednesday. Concerning "The Smart Set" let me whisper that it is about the best of William Haines' smart-aleck films and is sure to please. His smartness rather irritates but the pix is original and one you'll enjoy. "Burning Daylight," a Milton Sills picture of excellent quality, is sche- duled for Saturday, June 2 "The Legion of the Condemned," "The Big City," "My Best Girl" and "Across to Singapore" will be among next week's films. : William Haines Deserts Usual Smart-Aleck Role Cyril Chadwick, famous British ac- tor, is appearing with William Haines in "Excess Baggage," adapted from the famous stage play of that name, and directed by James Cruze, director of "The Covered Wagon." SUFFERS LEAD POISONING John Gilbert, motion picture actor, as you doubtless know, was removed on May 22 to his home suffering from lead poisoning. The poison was con- tracted from his makeup, it was said. Bill-O-Fare Saturday, May 26 "Burning Daylight". ...00... Varsity "Across to Singapore" ...... Nagel Selected for Role in "War in Dark" With the selection of Conrad Na- gel for the masculine lead in "War in the Dark," Greta Garbo's new film, preparations have been completed for the production of this story of Euro- pean intrigue. An Associated Press dispatch to metropolitan papers this week carried an account of a costly fire which swept the Fox Film studio at Hollywood, causing damage to the extent of about $200,000. Hollywood's entire fire fighting reserve was called into ac- tion before the blaze was brought nder control. Walter Butler, an English actor, has been engaged to appear opposite Vilma Banky in her future films. Mr. Butler will be seen under the film name, Byron. It is thus rather clearly out- lined that Vilma will not appear op- posite her husband, Rod La Rocque. Pathe will star or feature Jacqueline Logan, Allen Hale, William Boyd, Phyllis Haver, and Victor Varconi in future films. Boyd is being loaned to United Artists to appear opposite Lupe Velez in "La Paiva." A piano prologue for the "Heart of Maryland" will be presented by Miss Margaret Hubsch. The picture, which is being presented on Tuesday, is a Dolores Costello opus and offers splen- did entertainment. Richard Dix takes the lead in "Sporting Goods" as an enterprising golf equipment salesman. Richard is "up with the lark, down with the grape- fruit and out with the samples." Trou- ble dogs his steps, however, and you'll enjoy this farce from start to finish. Flash, Dog Marvel, Appears in "Deadline" "Flash," wonder dog, is making his second screen appearance in "The Deadline." Louise Lorraine and Law- rence Gray have the leading roles. Lilli Damiti, the blonde Parisian actress engaged by Samuel Goldwys during his recent trip abroad, will piay Opposite Ronald Colman in his next m. coming Cecil B. De Mille will continue to produce and release through Pathe, at least until fall, it is reported. More than $18,000,000 was invested during 1927 in new industries in II- linois, outside of Chicago. aALABAN & KATZ ORSHORE HOWARD AVE.
