June 9, 1928 WINNETKA TALK +7 North Shore Girl Graduates Receive N.K. E. C. Honors Miss Esther Christie of Kenilworth was awarded the Elizabeth Harrison scholarship, and Miss Louise Henrek- son of Wilmette the Mrs. John N. Crouse scholarship at the forty-second annual commencement of the National Kindergarten and Elementary College, held Wednesday afternoon, June 6, in Harrison hall. These scholarships, the gift of the Alumnae association, in memory of the founders of the institution, were the first honorary scholarships established in the college, and are given in recog- nition of outstanding scholastic ability, fine character and contribution to stu- dent affairs. Preceding the award of the scholar- ships, fourteen in number, the degree of Bachelor of Education was con- ferred on twelve students, and 230 di- plomas were presented to students completing the two and three years of training. Miss Helen Hubsch of Win- netka, who has completed the three years of training, received the Kinder- garten-Elementary diploma, and the Kindergarten-Primary diploma, in recognition of two years of training, was given to the following north shore students: Mary Crush, Louise Henrek- son, Anne Matson and Louise Nilles of Wilmette; Bernice Abrahamson and Laura Louise Adams of Winnetka ; Es- ther Christie of Kenilworth; Carolyn Ballou and Dorothy Beck of Glencoe. TO HOLD ANNUAL MEETING Monday, June 11, the North Shore Musical society will have its annual business meeting and election of offi- cers at the North Shore hotel, Evans- ton. Luncheon will be served at 1 o'clock. Mary Crane Nursery School Head Is to Travel Abroad Mrs. George M. Groves of 415 Davis street, Evanston, will attend the gradu- ation of her daughter, Barbara, from Bradford academy, Bradford, Mass., June 8 to 11, before sailing June 16, for a two months' trip in Europe. Mrs. Harry G. Phillips and her father, Joseph Shore, will join Mrs. Groves in New York for the trip. They will sail on the Homeric of the White Star line and plan to travel through England, Scotland, Holland, Switzerland, and France. Mrs. Groves, president of the Mary Crane Nursery School auxiliary, has led that organization through a year of active co-operation with the Na- tional Kindergarten and Elementary college in the support of the Nursery school at Hull House. Mrs. Groves plans for an enthusiastic start in the autumn, as the auxiliary continues to assist the college in its work. W. W. G. A. Teams Begin Season Tourney The Woman's Western Golf associa- tion opened its tournament season Monday with the first of a series of six sectional team matches. The series is to close August 20 and September 10, and the three sectional winners will contend for the district championship. It was announced that thirty teams were expected to participate in the opening competition, with the north side group playing at Glenview Golf club.
